Go figure. I would have had Ellsbury run for Varitek and was yelling at the TV. But then Els gets the big pinch hit instead.
The ball that Pedroia hit bounced perfectly into the fielders throwing hand. If it didn’t, there would have been no play.
Buchholz is supposedly faster than even Elsbury in a straight ahead sprint, so Francona did have reasons for the move. But risking a starting pitcher with a headfirst slide is boneheaded.
A move should have been made when Tek was on first.
