Baseball’s salary inflation rate, and MLB’s revenue inflation rate, are both well over 2.4%. MLB’s revenues have basically doubled since Prior was drafted, so $20 million wouldn’t have been unreasonable in that context.

If you factor in an inflation rate of 2.4%, it works out to about an 18% increase over what Prior got. Still damn good in my opinion.

I’m not sure how you can call Boras a winner here. Yes, Strasburg got more than Mark Prior but that was 8 years ago, is Strasburg’s contract any higher than the rate of inflation? Add in the fact that MLB revenues have nearly doubled in that time frame. In real dollars, it seems that Strasburg’s bonus was less than Prior’s.

Boras got lucky with the A-Rod deal. If A-Rod didn’t know the right people to set up the meeting again with the Steinbrenners (and swallowed his pride in doing so) he would not be a Yankee. Boras was EXTREMELY lucky.

Rotohead: How did Boras lose with the opt-out? Some bad pub? So what?
He ended up shredding a $252m contract and UPPED it with a $275M (+$25m in incentives) contract. How’s that a losing move.
And yes, it is always about the money!
Boras won, the Nats won, Strasburg won. Baseball’s slotting/recommendation process lost. Again.
