I hesitate to suggest keeping Bradley around when I'm not the one that has to deal with him. Still, I would need something in return if I'm giving up one of my best hitters. Plus, what are the chances that Bradley's bat bounces back next year? He's been remarkably productive throughout his career, hitting well even when injured. And as we've seen this year, the Cubs need all the hitters we can get, and they certainly don't have that offense in the upper levels of the farm system.
Another problem is that guys like Phil Rogers have little credibility when they start throwing around the "clubhouse cancer" label. It's applied all too often to the wrong people for the wrong reasons, and the Zambrano article seems to be a good example. He may be absolutely right about Bradley, but I just can't take his word for it.
The fans could care less, so long as the Cubs win. Trading Bradley would not stem the discontent. I'd want a better reason than that before I dropped $10 million or so by paying him to play for someone else.

i'd like to get rid of the particular faction of knee-jerk, dimwitted cubs fans and their jokey frat party of an atmosphere at the ball park. what a bunch of losers. booing the home team constantly. pouring beer on opposing players. inviting some z-list celebrity to blather along to 'take me out to the ballgame' and further ruin the TV broadcast for an inning while their homer announcers kiss up to the so-called celebs. watching a cubs home game is more like watching an episode of "married with children", there is so little class involved.
then some "fans" leave a comment like this: "if OBP is so important why don't they put it on the scoreboard?"
really? you don't understand why OBP is important?
and specifically regarding bradley, do you even realize how few players have an OBP approaching .400? and this is in a down year. he might be a head case but he's a still a very good hitter.

It be fantastic if player contracts included a "loser" clause...so that losers, like Milton Bradley, would not be entitled to collect the millions that they sign for. You have to love professional sports...where else would a bum like this find a job? I'm betting that Burger King wouldn't keep him. I would send him down to single "A" Peoria and let him ride buses for the rest of his contract.

Craig,
Your big assumption is that somebody else is as dumb as the Cubs in wanting "9 Innings" Bradley. The guy is a pyscho version of T.O., with way fewer skills, more money.....and a bat!
The only good thing about going to Wrigley to see him would be starting a betting pool in the bleachers on when he melts down next!

Unmitigated disaster? He hasn't been nearly as good as he was in San Diego and Texas, but his .387 OBP isn't exactly hurting the Cubs. In fact, it's the best on the team (tied with Fukudome, as of today).
If OBP is so important, why don't they put it on the scoreboard?

A guy who can get on base at a .390 clip, even in a down year, has some value; granted its somewhat reduced by the alarming lack of power and the headaches that come along with the whole "Milton Bradley experience", but his value is decidedly non-zero, and non-negative.
Opportunity costs play a role here; as in, what are the Cubs' in-house laternatives? Clearing some room, somewhere, to get Jake Fox into the lineup more regularly is a good thing.

long time cubs fan....we keep pointing fingers at players, managers, etc. and they deserve some criticism because it it up to them to play and earn the salary. But why as cubs fan we never point the finger at the correct guy. Jim Hendry, he's the one who signs these bums to big money. Come look, he didn't sign Wood because we had Gregg, didn't sign Henry Blanco signed Paul Bako instead and ended up releasing him, Joey Gathwright gone, Felix Pie the one time savior of centerfield for the next 10 yrs...gone. Signed Soriano to a huge deal until he turns 41!! Remeber few years ago, for the play off run he traded a few releivers for Steve Trachsel! he went 0-2 the remainder of the season and didn't make the playoff roster! mark Derosa..gone replaced with aaron miles (nice) Milton Bradley...i typically give first year players the benefit of the doubt, considering the new surroundings etc, but that benefit is getting thin. Fukudome...sometimes solid..but not the 25-30 HRs we need and 4yrs 48 million!! for a guy hitting in the .260's and 10-15 HRs.
the guy who should be feeling the heat is Hendry...is pulling all the strings in this circus show.

Do the " Marbury " on this jerk . Ignore him and don't play him until he begs to leave Chicago with a low level buy out . The Cubbie management was wrong signing this ungrateful , whinning , average player. The Cub fans need to boo him and let him know they can't wait for the ninth inning also so they don't have see this lousy crying baby dressed up like a real ball player. Adios Baby !
Cubbies , get us someone who loves Chicago , wakes up each morning and can't wait to put on the uniform , and will do anything to win . The organization and fans deserve no less than that . Lou Pinella hang in there ...you're for real !

The Cubs are not going to advance to the NLCS anyway, so why try and trade Bradley? Make the bum play; just don't make him available to the media anymore. It's always been his mouth that has gotten him into the most trouble. The guy can actually play baseball, although he has been awfully inconsistent. Hendry hired this bozo; he should not be able to dump him so easily. Perhaps the team needs to dump Hendry instead.

Isn't Phil Rogers the guy that wanted to release Zambrano, too (perhaps I'm misremembering, though)? He seems a little trigger-happy, that's for sure. I guess maybe he wanted to get rid of Z on waivers so that the Cubs don't have to pay his salary. Still.

I'm not saying teams shouldn't be willing to get rid of sunk costs just because they're paying them, but I don't know that taking the J.P. Ricciardi route is necessarily the way to go, either.
