After all, these are generally the players who have made the most money, and who one might expect to be happiest to enjoy some time with their families on their yachts. When you then consider how few managers could be considered to “make a mark,” it seems like the odds are pretty high against a superstar reaching that standard, even before one considers actual managing ability.
And let’s not forget that Joe Torre won an MVP and was a 9 time All-Star – perhaps not superstar level, but definitely a very good player and a star.
