Vin Scully is not just the GREATEST Dodger announcer, he’s the GREATEST baseball announcer EVER…no current announcer even comes close; and, the greats from yesteryear pale by comparison(Curt Gowdy, Mel Allen, Red Barber, Ernie Harwell, Harry Carey, Jack Buck…none of ‘em.) And, you can even compare side by side. Listen to Vinnie’s call of Kirk Gibson’s World Series HR in Game 1 of the 1988 series, then Jack Buck’s. Buck talks all over the crowd response…Vinnie shuts up and let’s the fans do all the “talking”. It’s not “what you say”, it’s knowing when NOT to; and Vinnie’s got that nailed.
It’s going to be a sad day in Dodger-town when Vin hangs ‘em up. The Lakers had Vin Scully’s basketball equivalent in Chick Hearn and it’s just not the same (or WORTH) listening to a Laker game without him.

Lee, You hit it right on the head. I’ve been listening to Vin Scully since I was living in LA when he partnered up with Jerry Doggett. I love his statistics and his fluid style. You can close your eyes even when you went to the game at Chavez Ravine and still picture everything that was going on in the field and actually visualize the history he kept you up on about the batters ot pitchers. No I can only see and hear him when the Dodgers are on MLB Xtra innings as I’m far away from LA. I hope he never goes away…

You are apparently not a true Dodger fan or avid Baseball fan for that matter. Everyone knows Vin Scully is a great announcer, his stories keep things interesting when there is nothing going on at that time. And you always know the score, how many outs and other important info whenever you tune into a game. Alot of the newer announcers dont tell you crap half the time. i have gotten into my car after work, and tuned into a Giant’s game and for the entire half inning was not told how many outs or even what inning it was. Vin Scully was taught that you have to remember that peple tune in and out of the game and to always let listeners know what is going on.

Hmmmm….I’m a Oriole fan, been one since 1961. I have to you, Gary Thorne is much worse than Scully. Gotta be. And the worst of it is that he’s from Boston, and he holds that on his sleeve. Especially when the O’s play the Red Sox. I mean, the guy is as pitiful as the Oriole middle bullpen, and that’s pitiful. I often wonder how the guy got the job……

The 2006 MVP was given to the wrong player. Ortiz should have gotten it but since he doesn’t play the field he got knocked for that. Jetter should have probably still finished 2nd.
If the media hates the Yankees so much why is it every national sports news program will spend more time talking about them then any other team?

Vin Scully is downright annoying. He blubbers on and on and on about trivia that has nothing to do with what’s going on. I don’t care what color shirt the batter wore when he was in the play in the 2nd grade. Wish he’d just shut up and retire.

Since Yankee-hate is now perspective du-jour for the media, no Yankee will ever win AL MVP, unless it’s like Mattingly in ’85 or A-Rod in ’05 and ’07, when there really isn’t any competition at all. If it’s close, it’ll always go to the non-Yankee. Exhibit A: 2006 AL MVP.

It’s only fair to point out that Vin Scully does a simulcast for the first three innings of every game: TV AND Radio.
An announcer has to be much more detailed and chatty in a radio boradcast as the listener can not see the events he is describing.
He is far less wordy from the fourth inning on…..

Something interesting to think about (won’t happen, but never thought it was this likely)
Arod projected through the rest of the season would get 29 more hits bringing him up to 2531. 9 more years (age 42) of 189 hits each year (career average) gets him to 4232, almost to Pete Rose.
Career HR and Hits leader? Damn…
