Sorry, want to make a correction. I think it was Carpenters team mate Halliday in Toronto (around 2001-2002-2003)who won the Cy. However Carpenter was a very good pitcher, with are trouble.

Uh…Shely…Chris Carpenter never won the AL Cy Young.
He never even got a VOTE for the AL Cy Young.
He was 49-50 with a 4.83 ERA in Toronto.
He never won more than 12 games or had an ERA under 4 in Toronto.
He was a 1st round pick, and was seen as a guy who had a lot of talent, but couldn’t quite get it all together, and couldn’t stay healthy.

What are you talking about? Carpenter was not an average pitcher with Toronto. He was an AL Cy Young winner before surgery. Get your head out of your homer rear end. He was a great pitcher before Duncan or Tony got him.

my vote would go to Chris Carpenter! Lincecum may have more strikeouts but he only has 13 wins…its not about who can strike out more guys its who helps their team to more wins. if you want a better stat than strikeouts look at joel pinero he has less walks then starts this year and has more wins than Lincecum. the leaders have to be:
1) Chris Carpenter
2) Adam Wainwright
3) Tim Lincecum
4) Dan Haren/Joel Pinero

Carpenter has a lot of guts, and is a truly great competitor.
Wish Greinke had some of that talent behind him.

There was a lot of speculation last year as to whether or not Carpenter would even be back….He is back with a vengence. Go Cards!

Carpenter is another of pitching coach Dave Duncan’s miracles. In the 4 years he has been healthy in St. Louis Carpenter is 66-23 with an ERA well under 3.00. He was a very average pitcher at best with Toronto before St. Louis signed him. How long his twice surgically repaired arm will last is anyone’s guess.

Whether Carpenter wins the Cy Young is irrelavent. It’s a greart story for a guy who had major arm surgery and missed a year to be pitching as he is. He has had two major arm surgeries in his career and has somehow bounced back to be outstanding each time.
