He can’t play 2B, 3B, or the OF well….or even at an acceptable level. Yeah, that’s versatile. He can also strike out swinging at pitches out of the strike zone no matter how an at bat starts; I admit it, I haven’t seen many players so skilled at getting themselves out while not seeing anything resembling a strike.
He’s awesome.

The versatility makes him a LaRussian dream (and, to be fair, really is helpful on a team that’s playing an OF at 2B and carries 22 pitchers), while the power he’s shown the past two seasons (.481 and .447 SLG the past two seasons, respectively) is nice if he’s coming off the bench or playing 2B or, more rarely, SS.
Now, if he’s playing 3B and being paid a premium for it, that’s a problem. And if he’s playing 3B and being paid a premium for it and hitting like April/May 2009 Big Papi, that’s a real problem.
Surely Cardinals management has some super-complicated KEEP PUJOLS plan that this fits into?
