Just take your base, Jorge

Sep 16, 2009, 2:36 AM EDT

posada_090915.jpgTake your base Jorge. Just take your base.

That’s what you do when a pitcher throws a pitch behind you. A pitcher on a team that is not going to come anywhere near sniffing the playoffs.

Yes, Jesse Carlson threw that ball near your backside on purpose (somehow he missed). He was trying to hit you. He was trying to defend the honor of Edwin Encarnacion and Aaron Hill, who were nailed by pitches thrown by Yankee pitchers.

It doesn’t matter if Encarnacion and Hill were hit on purpose or on accident. When a couple guys on one team get hit, a guy on your team is probably going to get hit (or at least thrown at) in response. That’s how it works in baseball.

And after more than 1,500 games played at the big league level, I’m surprised you didn’t know that. If you need a refresher course on how these things work, read this. I promise you it’s gold.

Instead of taking your base after drawing that walk, you had words with Carlson. That’s fine. But when you came around to score a meaningless run in this Toronto blowout, you decided to toss a wayward elbow Carlson’s direction as he covered home. You’re lucky no one was injured in the wild melee that ensued. A concussion for Jeter? A strained muscle for Teixeira? A bruised rib for Sabathia? It wouldn’t take much.

I’m not terribly worried about the possible suspension you’re facing. It would take an incredible run for the Red Sox to catch your Yankees now. But still, next time? Just take your base. Or at least listen to Cito Gaston:

“I don’t know if that was too smart. They have a lot more to lose than we do.”

Amen.

What another stupid azz article by Bob here, if he ever wrote anything decent i think i’d drop dead by the shock of it

  4. bugsbunny - Sep 16, 2009 at 8:48 AM

Seems that teams like the Jays think they have free reign because they’re 26 games back and think they have nothing to lose. Their manager as much as said so.

The bottom line is that Posada shouldn’t have reacted the way that he did…….being thrown at is part of baseball and he should know better….it doesn’t matter what team you play for or whether or not your team has a shot at October.

Yanks fan here. Posada was 100% wrong. Period.

MAYBE YOU SHOULD STAND IN THE BATTERS BOX WHILE A 90 MILE PER HOUR
BALL ZOOMS BY YOUR BACK/HEAD……….BUT HEY, THAT’S PART OF THE
    GAME , RIGHT?
THE BLUE JAYS HAVE COME AFTER THE YANKEES ON MANY OF OCCASIONS OVER THE YEARS AND THE YANKEES MUST LET THEM AND ALL OTHER TEAMS KNOW THEY WILL GET BUZZED AS WELL.I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH WHAT OCCURED IN LAST NIGHTS GAME, I WATCHED THE GAME SAW ALL THE EXTRA CURRICULAR
ACTIVITY AND BOTH SIDES WERE EVEN IN WHAT HAPPENED.ALSO, THIS IS NOTHING NEW IN BASEBALL BUT BECAUSE THE YANKEE NAME IS ATTACHED EVERYONE IS APPAULED AT WHAT HAPPENED.THE YANKEES HAVE MANY PLAYERSMAKING 20 MILLION PER YEAR AND THEY HAVE TO PROTECT THEIR INVESTMENT.LQQK UP HOW MANY YANKEES PLAYERS HAVE BEEN HIT, INJURED BY THE JAYS PITCHERS.
ALSO, THE PITCHER SURE WAS YAKKING IT UP AND WAS NOT BACKING UP THE PLAY LIKE HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN, HE WAS IN THE POSADAS PATH AND LIKE I SAID I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH WHAT HAPPENED, THERE IS NO CRYING IN BASEBALL, MAYBE THE BLUE JAYS CAN PLAY DRESS UP AND HAVE A TEA TIME DATE WITH THE LITTLE GIRLS FORM THE GIRLS SCOUT, I WILL ALSO SCHEDULE ANYONE HERE IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND.

boys stop whining…you know you all love a good fight.

  14. HOTROD - Sep 16, 2009 at 11:17 AM

INSTEAD OF BEATING THEM BECAUSE YOU ARE BETTER YOU WANT TO PURPOSELY INJURE THEM, THAT IS REAL NICE. YOU ARE WONDERFUL
PERSON SUCH A HUMANITARIAN, YOU SHOULD BE A LITTLE LEAGUE COACH.
I WONDER WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE IF EVERY BATTER THREW HIS BAT AT THE PICHER AFTER BEING HIT BY A 90 MILE PER HOUR BALL, SOMETHING SAY’S PITCHERS JUST MIGHT RECONSIDER THEY DO IT.

  15. A.P. - Sep 16, 2009 at 11:19 AM

Maybe HOTROD should take off the caps lock.

  16. Stultus Magnus - Sep 16, 2009 at 11:21 AM

  18. well, duh - Sep 16, 2009 at 11:24 AM

HOTROD has no idea what CAPSLOCK is.

  19. Fight Night - Sep 16, 2009 at 11:35 AM

Bob, Bob, Bob… First of all, John Kruk and Chris Singleton on Baseball Tonight questioned Carlson’s positioning while “backing up” home. With a ball hit to right field he should’ve been on the 3rd base side and Posada knows that – so does Jim Joyce, for that matter – but there he is on the 1st base side. Hmmmmm – do ya think he knew what he was doing there? Should Posada have left things alone and just trotted home? Sure, but Carlson knows the deal and planted himself in the path to the dugout. I think it’s absurd that Joyce said Posada gave Carlson a cheap shot! It was a brush of the elbow that said: “Get the f*** out of the way – I know what you’re doing.” Once Joyce ejected him (bizarre move) and Carlson yelled at him, well, yeah, Posada went a little loco but Carlson was definitely pushing it with Posada and got some face candy as a consolation prize.

  20. HOTROD - Sep 16, 2009 at 11:44 AM

    I CAN’T FIND THE CAPS LOCK………HELP
DUDE, PLEASE RELAX AND DON’T GET BENT OUT OF SHAPE ABOUT THE FACT
I TYPE IN ALL CAPS.ALSO, FEEL FREE NOT TO READ MY POST, IT IS
AMERICA WHERE YOU ARE ALLOWED TO LEAVE YOUR CAPS LOCK ON.
    BORN TO BE FREE…………….
LIVE FREE OR DIE TRYING ………….
    BUH BYE……….

  21. HOTROD - Sep 16, 2009 at 11:49 AM

CALL THE POLICE, I’M TYPING IN ALL CAPS, EVER WONDER WHY THEY HAVE A CAPS LOCK KEY, IT’S BECAUSE YOU CAN HAVE IT ON or off.
I WANT TO ANNOY YOU FELLAS SINCE IT IRKS YOU, WHAT CAN I SAY.
SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO OBJECT TO MY USING THE CAPS CAN’T EVEN VOICE THEIR OPINION AT HOME BECAUSE THE WIFE WILL TELL THEM TO SHUT UP SO THEY COME HERE TO SHOW HOW MASCULINE THEY ARE, I’M NOT IMPRESSED.

  22. MikemFla - Sep 16, 2009 at 12:00 PM

you’re exactly right. carlson positioned himself for a confrontation and thats what he got. sure posada could have left it alone in the interest of not getting hurt/suspended for the playoffs but this is, and has always been, a part of baseball that i do not have a big problem with.
didnt see first hand but heard someone say arod avoided the fight like the swine flu, not wanting to get hurt. ok i understand that to a degree but i cant imagine not defending and standing up for my teammates in that situation. that’s been the knock on arod that he’s always thinking about himself and lacks the emotion and camaraderie that will make him a true yankee in the fans’ eyes…at least until he does something memorable in october besides wilt.

  23. HOTROD - Sep 16, 2009 at 12:00 PM

IF YOU WANT TO BE A BAD BOY AND MIX IT UP, THE YANKEES ARE NOT BACKING DOWN, JUST LIKE NEW YORKERS THAT’S WHY WE LOVE OUR TEAMS.
PITCHERS LIKE TO HIT GUYS AND THEN WAIT FOR THEIR POSITION PLAYERS TO BACK THEM UP…..
JOE TORRE NEVER ASKED HIS PITCHERS TO THROW AT THE OPPOSING TEAM
SO THEY TRADED FOR ROCKET, HE TOOK CARE OF IT.
LISTEN, GEORGE STEINBRENNER JUST CALLED, HE SAID POSADA DID THE RIGHT THING, THAT IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME AND LIKE I TOLD YOU FALLAS BEFORE, GOD IS A YANKEE FAN, HE SAID CARLSON SHOULD LQQK
THE OTHER WAY ………BEFORE HE ENDS UP WITH A LUMP ON HIS HEAD AND A BUSTED LIP, WHO SAY’S YOU DON’T GET WHAT YOU DESERVE.

  24. Shinster - Sep 16, 2009 at 12:12 PM

Jorge Posada’s has a small head. Body to head ratio is smaller than most…

  25. HOTROD - Sep 16, 2009 at 12:14 PM

A-ROD WAS IN THERE, THE FIRST ONE IN THE MIX WAS J.DAMON AND THEN JETER WHO WAS BEING PEACE MAKER AND WAS NOT BEING CONFRONTATIONAL.
EVERYONE JUST LIKE TO PUT A-ROD IN THE MIX OF ALL BAD THING.
JETER WHO I LOVE AS A PLAYER IS MORE LIKELY TO NOT THROW A PUNCH
BUT THAT IS WHO HE IS SO I WON’T DUMP ON HIM.
