Just take your base, Jorge

Sep 16, 2009, 2:36 AM EDT

posada_090915.jpgTake your base Jorge. Just take your base.

That’s what you do when a pitcher throws a pitch behind you. A pitcher on a team that is not going to come anywhere near sniffing the playoffs.

Yes, Jesse Carlson threw that ball near your backside on purpose (somehow he missed). He was trying to hit you. He was trying to defend the honor of Edwin Encarnacion and Aaron Hill, who were nailed by pitches thrown by Yankee pitchers.

It doesn’t matter if Encarnacion and Hill were hit on purpose or on accident. When a couple guys on one team get hit, a guy on your team is probably going to get hit (or at least thrown at) in response. That’s how it works in baseball.

And after more than 1,500 games played at the big league level, I’m surprised you didn’t know that. If you need a refresher course on how these things work, read this. I promise you it’s gold.

Instead of taking your base after drawing that walk, you had words with Carlson. That’s fine. But when you came around to score a meaningless run in this Toronto blowout, you decided to toss a wayward elbow Carlson’s direction as he covered home. You’re lucky no one was injured in the wild melee that ensued. A concussion for Jeter? A strained muscle for Teixeira? A bruised rib for Sabathia? It wouldn’t take much.

I’m not terribly worried about the possible suspension you’re facing. It would take an incredible run for the Red Sox to catch your Yankees now. But still, next time? Just take your base. Or at least listen to Cito Gaston:

“I don’t know if that was too smart. They have a lot more to lose than we do.”

Amen.

Carlson’s a punk. Looking forward to tonight’s game.

Seems like HOTROD (aka HOTHEAD) needs a life. First, baseball is a game, not a gang war. Second, given the silly history of retaliation that is prevalent in what is otherwise the least violent of major pro sports, it only stands to reason that Posada would never have been thrown at if two Jays players were not thrown at earlier.
What is worse than adults acting like children on a ball field is adults acting like children on these blogs who try to justify this nonsense.

In the article that you ask Jorge to read, the second anecdote by Blyleven, he charges the mound!. So, apparently there are times to take your base, and sometimes not.

  4. Nigel Incubator-Jones - Sep 16, 2009 at 1:02 PM

Sorry, it was the first anecdote..
Blyleven said “..I charged the mound and started a huge rhubarb.”

some recent history…not only did the yankees throw at 2 Jays before the posada incident, but during the last series, it was the same thing, except that the Jays did not retaliate.
not sure if the yankees pitchers throw at everyone or it’s just the Jays that worry them.

you guys are a bunch of sniveling little moron’s,the Yankees’s suck

  7. Wendy Free - Sep 16, 2009 at 2:30 PM

I think someone should give Posada a baby bottle and a sucky blanket. Poor baby was upset that his team is down and can’t take it like a man. What he did was uncalled for and he should be suspended and lose his paycheck earnings for that game.

  8. red3biggs - Sep 16, 2009 at 3:20 PM

Yeah uh.. not sure if you remember the Yanks vs Rangers game this year put Padilla (Rangers) plunked Teix every at bat (there is some history there, but you got to love his efforts to keep his pitch count low on IBB)
So Kinsler gets plunked in his at bat.
And you didnt see Young say a thing to Jorge or the pitcher. He just took his base.

  9. red3biggs - Sep 16, 2009 at 3:21 PM

    Young was hit, not Kinsler.

Yankee fan here- let’s face it, Posada was wrong. He called the pitches that hit 2 Blue Jays so he had to know what was coming. And he should’ve just taken his base instead of walking to the mound talking to Carlsson. That being said, there is no doubt that Carlsson was looking to continue the skirmish when instead of backing up the throw, like he should have, he loitered around the base waiting for Posada to come home. Posada deserves whatever discipline the league hands out, and Carllson deserved the beating!

  11. awineguy - Sep 16, 2009 at 3:57 PM

Posada was wrong, wrong to jaw with Carlson and waaaaaaaay wrong with the cheapshot elbow.
Posada knows he was wrong but he snapped, it’s over.
As for Hothead, the Yanks started the drillfest so what did they expect ?
Just one more thing, in order to be a foot taller and 9o pounds heavier than Matt Stairs A-Rod would need to be 6’9″ and weigh about 310.

  12. PeteinFla - Sep 16, 2009 at 3:59 PM

    Yo as’sfan,
Last time I checked the Yanks had the best record in baseball. Your team of minor league ball, er I mean “little ball” hasn’t been relevant since the Roidball team of Mcgwire, Canseco and Giambi over 10 years ago!

Any golden words of wisdom for the Blue Jay who scratched Girardi’s face like a pre-schooler (caught on tape)??

  14. PeteinFla - Sep 16, 2009 at 4:20 PM

Did not see that video. Any idea who it was?

  15. HOTROD - Sep 17, 2009 at 3:43 PM

I GUESS THE FACT THE BALL WAS BEHIND POSADA’S BACK/HEAD FLEW OVER YOUR HEAD…
HEY RED, WHY DON’T YOU STAND IN THERE WITH A 90 MILE AN HOUR BALL AT YOUR HEAD, EVER HER OF DICKIE THON ? DAVID WRIGHT……..
DUDE, WHAT IS YOUR POINT ???
I GUESS PEOPLE SHOULD DIE IN BASEBALL BECAUSE THROWING AT A GUY IS PART OF THE GAME……….. THIS IS SICK REASONING AT BEST

  16. HOTROD - Sep 17, 2009 at 4:15 PM

HEY WHINE GUY- U LIKE THAT, HUH – INSTEAD OF HATING ON THE YANKEES FOR BEING THE BEST BASEBALL TEAM IN THE UNIVERSE WHY DON’T YOU GO LQQK UP THE HISTORY OF THE BLUEJAYS AND YANKS BEFORE YOU PUT OUT INFO WITH NO FACTS TO BACK THEM UP.ALSO, I DON’T GIVE A NEW YORK RATS BUTT ABOUT THE RACCOON MATT STAIRS BECAUSE HE IS NOT SO BRIGHT WANTING TO DANCE WITH THE MUCH BIGGER A-ROD, MATT IS A MORON AND I WOULD LOVE TO SMACK HIM AROUND IF GIVEN THE CHANCE.DUDE, WHY IS THAT YOU KNOW MATT’S BODY SO WELL ?

  17. Yanks#1 - Sep 21, 2009 at 8:17 PM

I couldn’t agree more…I am a huge Yankee fan, but Posada acted like an idiot, he knew they threw at the Jays, so take your hits and leave it alone. he is quite a hot-head though :) And yes, they both deserved what they got.

Are you talking about yourself? And why is it in every blog you discuss your fantasy of jumping rope, playing dress-up and drinking tea with the girls?

Jorge or should I say Ray Romano, is a Dork.Tough guy, what would you do in a fight, spit on someone or tell jokes. Grab your jock, and suck it up. You’re not Yogi Berra.
