I will be watching it all on TV which costs me nothing more than watching Gene Autry on the Western channel. Gene wore a white hat and called his horse “Champ”. The Yankee’s will be wearing blue hats but will still be called “Champs” despite how the series turns out. What I meant in my earlier comment was a Red Sox-Yankees ALDS matchup. The ticket prices are whatever the traffic will bear. If you don’t want to pay them just watch TV. I know how great it is to be at the game but in todays age we don’t miss much with the great coverage technology has provided us at a reasonable price. The bottom line is the choices made by the General managers of the teams. I like my Yankee’s chances.

The Steinbrenner family does not own CABLEVISION – it is owned by the Dolan family – and when the Dolans wanted to buy the Yankees about three years ago they were laughed out of the building by the steinbrenner family. HUH

Perhaps, but oddly enough, we’re both in the same spot, that is, in the ALDS.
Only our ticket only cost $121M, and your ticket cost $205M. So the NYY basically paid $84,000,000 for home field advantage, right???

I posted about 6 weeks ago that the Red Sox, who were then 6and 1/2 games behind that as far as the division goes you could stick a fork in them, and was called an idiot who knew nothing about baseball. I also stated that even though I am a Yankee fan there is no other team a true Yankee fan would rather face in the playoffs. It is a Love/Hate relationship that transcends many lifetimes and generations. There is nothing that would make me happier than a Yankee-Red Sox ALCS. I know there are cities that could use the economic input of such a series and wish them well but I want to see a pit bull fight. It must be the Michael Vick in me. Please forgive me as apparently The NFL forgives Michael.

The Red Sox-Angels could turn out to be a pretty exciting series, since the two teams know each other well. I wonder if Angels fans are thinking “Oh not AGAIN, the Red Sox again??” Maybe though, this year might be different. The Sawx’ pitching, up until recently, has been pretty solid, but the last 2 games vs the Jays haven’t been positive. One thing though is that the Red Sox’ wealth of playoff experience the last several years cannot be denied, & it could help them again this year. But maybe the Angels are finally due this time, they have a terrific team yet hardly get any attention from the East Coast media( gee, I wonder why? )& maybe this is their time this year.

Of course it’s not what Red Sox fans want to see happen. This year’s Sox make it hard to be a true blue fan. On paper, the Yankees win the World Series. But, of course, playoffs aren’t played on paper.

You say you do not want to offend, then make a statement you guarantee will offend. You can see the contradiction in that, right? What is it you are used to getting? You are throwing boomerangs and act dumbfounded when someone tells you you are the instigator. I have not attacked you and am confused at what it is you have to ‘take.’ You must believe you can offend and expect nothing in return. Where are the Twins and Tiger fans who see this woman is looking down her nose and pitying them? Since when does the Series have to be determined by economic needs? Of course you will rationalize the WC when your team has finished second nine out of ten years. There is wildcard. There is an Al Qaida, also. Does that make either of them right?

Thank you for that correction, Harry, yes I did mean the pennant. But please do note that I did say “if the Red Sox make it past the excellent Angels” . . . which certainly does not assume a given. I also made no reference to anyone “buying” their team . . did part of your response perhaps apply to another blogger?
I agree that a team’s job is to win. I don’t think anyone here disagrees with that. So perhaps I missed your point? Or perhaps you missed mine?

Hm. I love the endless implication that the Yankees “buy their team”. Well, yeah, they do – by not really taking a profit on much of anything. The Steinbrenners have enough money from Cablevision; the Yankees’ function is to win. Which is why they’ve done it, more than any other American sports team. It’s also why all the money goes back into the team. My team wants to win, more than anything. And….they do.
And ladyfan, that made no sense; I think (though I’m not sure) that you meant that you hope the PENNANT series opponent comes from the Central. That’s unlikely, but not impossible, I admit. Never is. But you also seem to be assuming that you’ll get through the Angels with that pitching you’ve had lately, and that is in no way a given.
I kind of hope it does happen; we’ve had more trouble with the Angels than with Boston since the break.

Well you have a point, fanamine. We have too many “divisions”, and the teams in each division are woefully divergent when it comes to money, management, and wins. To my mind, it’s a completely illogical system and could use a complete overhaul, starting with having the same rules for the National and American leagues, and including a good shakeup of which teams are in which division – 18 games per year against the same old opponents has gotten way past boring. But if I get going on all the things that are wrong with the present league structure, everyone will fall asleep trying to read this.
We have to work within the system we have now, and fortunately for Red Sox Nation there IS a wild card, or we might have had to wait another lifetime!
May I just say though, not meaning to offend anyone, that if the Sox make it past the excellent Angels, our opponent for the World Series comes from the Central Division. Detroit and Minneapolis are both worthy teams with fans who have been hard hit by this depression we are supposedly not having, and they have good, hard-playing baseball teams – I would love to see one of those cities get the economic boost hosting World Series games would provide.
And yes, I realize I have made an enemy of every Yankee fan reading this, but we lifetime members of Red Sox Nation are used to that . . .we can take it.

Paul, even though there were many lost chances, the Sox always fielded a quality offense. Their pitching was their Achilles Heel for many seasons. Enjoy the successes. You never know if it will come again.

True that. The Sox (and their fans) should pray nightly to the gods of MLB for creating the WC. Without it, they would have only made it to the post season in 2007. Seems like they have trouble competing over the length of a 162 game schedule. They must get tired.

Ya know I liked it better when the Red Sox lost. It happened for an entire lifetime for me and I was still happy to be a fan. Fenway is still the best park to watch a game in of any sport. Small field, big time playing. The idea of them having to win a World Series every year is for the fair weather fans that joined us after the first ring. Sure I want a series as well as the next guy. Sheesh… maybe I should become a Cubbies fan

Good for you to rationally support your team. You do realize that the games must be played before you anoint yourselves the champs. There are 3 other teams who will do their best to take the prize. We no longer can say, “May the best team win.” In a pure world that would mean no wildcards. We have become a society who rewards failure.

Actually, in the post season for the past 10 years (going back to 2000), the Yanks & Sox have each had 8 series wins (Red Sox-4xALDS, 2xALCS & 2xWS – Yankees-4xALDS, 3xALCS & 1xWS). Not trying to be picky, but the two teams have been pretty even over the past ten years.

Gentlemen, gentlemen, please! back to your corners! Texas was never going to win the wild card and we all knew that, and the Sox are doing what the Sox always do . . . .playing the percentages. Players who need rest are getting rest. Pitchers who need to work on specific issues are trying to get that work in as best they can in the course of the remaining regular season games. We have arguably the best manager in all of baseball, and an ownership that is not afraid to make whatever moves are necessary. We have not come this far to embarrass ourselves in the post season, have some faith! These last few losses have not been pleasant for us to watch, but they were not necessary for us to win. Keep in mind that an over-exhausted or seriously injured player or players could ruin any chance of winning the WS.
Remember – it’s not about how you fight your battles. . . .it’s about being the last man standing.
That is going to be us . . . Red Sox Nation.
