Another day, another horrendous call

Oct 9, 2009, 10:25 PM EDT

The Twins and Joe Mauer were the latest victims of atrocious postseason umpiring in Friday’s game against the Yankees, when the likely MVP sliced a liner down the left-field line and had it drop a foot fair, only to see the ball ruled foul by left-field umpire Phil Cuzzi.
Cuzzi did have to contend with left fielder Melky Cabrera’s body on the play, as the ball ticked off Cabrera’s glove and then dropped, but he hardly seemed to be screened. He should have had a clear view of the ball coming down inside the line.
Cuzzi’s sole purpose in being on the field is making that call, and he simply didn’t do his job. It’s just the latest example of an obvious call being missed by a seemingly bored umpire, and it’s yet another in a long line of great cases for expanded instant replay in baseball.
Forget putting six umpires on the field. Simply put one in the booth with the TBS, FOX or whatever feed in front of him. Within 10 seconds of Cuzzi making the call, it was obvious to the millions of people watching that he had blown it. Why should anyone stand for it? We need to let the players on the field decide the game’s outcome, and technology can help get us closer to that goal.

Get the umpires off the field alltogether. No balls and strikes, the lasers do a much better job of it and with instant replay at least calls will be correct the vast majority of the time. Jeez, get it right is the bottom line and umpires just don’t.

Millybo, I was being facetious. Still I find it reasonable to question why he got that call wrong and I don’t find it completely unreasonable to question the ethics involved either.
Evidently you must have gotten your “real baseball fan” merit badge because you sure enjoy pointing that out in your posts. Congratulations.

The problem is perception. An umpire has to make 1 bad call and it could make his team a winner. It’s the perception that they’re on the take.

I’m big fan of one of these teams too. But that’s not the point.
Replays should be used. Hope the debate gets more life. The systems
in tennis and football are great. Each manager should get 2 or 3
challenges per game. If their right, a wrong call was made, they
don’t get their number of remaining challenges reduced!!!!!!!!
Blown calls determining these championships is a crime!

Video of the exactly where the ball landed — about 15 seats (3 sections) into fair territory. Along with replays and a shot of the guy who caught the ball.
Sorry chump, Yankees CRUSHED the Twins, and whine all you want about calls. In baseball the umpires always blow a call, and then make it up — like Swisher being thrown out at 2nd on a pick-off and called safe, followed by him being called out when he was safe on a sac fly.
Historically, an older pitcher who the umps know gets a strike call, an old home run champ gets the call for a ball on a strike. A tie goes to the fielder not the runner, etc etc. That’s part of the game and if you can;t understand pr face the fact that the Yanks outplayed the Twins in every aspect of the game, you should yank your skirt down and try to grow a set.

Shoe inserts are wedge-shaped inserts which are placed in the heel part of a shoe, with the purpose of adding elevation under one or both feet for therapeutic reasons. People who suffer foot pain whilst wearing shoes for an extended time. Heel lifts can reduce pain. Shoe lifts are also great for people who need to increase their height.

Thanks for posting this article. I’m decidedly frustrated with struggling to search out pertinent and intelligent commentary on this issue. Everybody today goes to the very far extremes to either drive home their viewpoint that either: everyone else in the planet is wrong, or two that everyone but them does not really understand the situation. Many thanks for your concise, pertinent insight.
