Because workplace affairs aren’t private conduct, they are workplace conduct, as this situation proves. BOY, people are hard-headed on this issue! Phillips was taking advantage of an inequity in power to turn ESPN into his own private dating bar (See: Letterman, David)

There are undoubtedly many things we can say about this young woman, if all the allegations are true: disturbed, immature, creepy, and potentially dangerous (though I’ll point out that Phillips is more than twice her age, and was definitely her superior in the ESPN pecking order). But let’s confine it to that. I’m sure you’re super-attractive.

With the exception of if you are married, since when did it become a crime to get involved with a co-worker? If you spend all day at work, they are the only ones you are going to be in contact with anyway. They are the only ones you really get to know. Too much wining about co-worker affairs lately. I think everyone will be happy when people act like robots and never make mistakes and never get involved with anyone. No feelings and no temptations. This country is getting too weird.

Phillips so obviously had to be suspended.
1) The basic fact pattern here — 46 yo senior employee having affair with entry-level 22 yo female — in and of itself is the start of a harassment claim.
2) He’s already been accused of harassment (by someone else)
3) The accuser has already shown a propensity for revenge; a lawsuit is up there as well
4) He filed a police report, increasing the odds of her suing ESPN even further.
ESPN’s best strategy against a suit is to suspend Phillips. The fact that it saves us from hearing him blather is nice, too.

I suppose this is one way to get his awefulness off the air, but still, this is awfully seedy and unpleasant.
By the way, is there anyone at ESPN not sleeping with production assistants? Please tell me Chris Berman, not because I like him, but because I don’t want to picture that. “And you see him right there, whooop! And then, whoop! And whoop! He…could…go…all…the…way!”

Hey Gleeman, did you read the letter the 22 year old woman who he was having the affair with wrote to Phillips wife? Priceless.
Phillips handled his affair about as well as he GM’ed the Mets.
