First off, the Red Sox probably would attempt to make a package that doesn't include Buccholz. The Padres have no interest or need for older relief pitchers when they are trying to rebuild with young talent they would be able to pay the minimum to for three years; and Papelbon particularly would get very expensive salary-wise fairly quickly. Bard and Bowden are mere pieces of a deal, and not centerpieces (though if the Red Sox are hot to trade Papelbon, it would behoove them to hold onto Bard). Lars Anderson was particularly disappointing this year, making me think that if the Red Sox want Gonzalez, they would either have to move Buccholz, or trade almost every promising piece in their system. I don't think either of the options are prudent.

Huh?
"The Red Sox don't have much in the way of MLB-ready level talent to burn."
Huh? Buccholz, Bowden and Bard, all making MLB appearances this year aren't MLB-ready talent? And that is just the tip of the iceberg farm.
And don't forget players like Papelbon, Del Carmen and Lowrie, players the Sox will be eager to trade for Gonzo.
Other than that, your article was Pulitzer-worthy.

To be honest, this is a pretty pointless article. Nothing else to write about? What source other than a just-fired GM do you have? He is the Padres best player, on a low payroll team, so of course he will be speculated as trade bait. He has been for years. What's new?
And I am no math wizard, but $4.75 million is not half of a $40mil payroll. There is no reason why the Pads can't afford to keep him. Peavy was our star, but financially his trade made sense because he was close to a third of the payroll, but trading Adrian makes no sense. Unless of course the team wants to lose all the fans and fold into oblivion.

Bait and switch. John Moores ripped the people of San Diego off. Built his stadium and condo projects, took the money and ran. Of course any city that votes for and pays for a stadium for a billionaire are a bunch of stupid people. So we deserve to take one in the shorts.

A Gonzalez deserves to be on a top tier team. Most of his home runs (as I've had him on my fantasy team last year) seemed to be solo home runs. Just imagine him as an RBI machine batting behind Ellsbury, Pedroia, and V Mart..
