It was a pleasure to hear Ken Rosenthal, in his conversation with talk show host Steve Somers, take the sizzle out of that phony attempt by some media types to create a ruckus where none existed. Not only should there have been no reporting of Cole Hamels' initial words of exasperation, there should have been no further attempts to then concoct hostility between him and a teammate. If I've had a long, hard term at school and now face an important exam for which I've studied for weeks, am I a quitter if I express how glad I will be when the term is over? Does this mean that I will not go out there and do the very best I can on that exam? These media types just want to invent an ugly episode, in order to have feature stories to build around it for days to come.

I'm always amused at those who claim a certain level of performance is necessary before someone can express an opinion. Or, as Jim Bouton put it in Ball Four, "you're only as smart as your ERA" in baseball. Brett Myers absolutely has the right to say what he said to Hamels. Now they're downplaying it. I don't buy it, my instinct is he probably meant it, and it was the appropriate thing to say. And another thing, he didn't go to a reporter and give an off-the-record quote. He said it to Hamels' face. Good for him. Hamels was last heard whining about the start time of a game during the LCS against Colorado. He was making pissy faces at Chase Utley when he threw a ball away in that same LCS. He should just shut his pie hole and pitch like he's capable of pitching and he'd be a lot better off. And so would the Phillies.

As Rosenthal said, these two guys are friends and they were joking around. Unfortunately, some online dude, who knows neither of the players, wrote it up as some kind of confrontation. It is the same with other "real" journalists who did not post Hamels' opening statement, about how he wants the opportunity to pitch in game 7. Look, Hamels is a little too California cool and he needs to focus and not worry about a blown call or missed play. Hopefully, he rebounds next season.

In Hamels we trust... In lidge we trust.. In Charlie we trust...
The Phillies have gotten this far with theses same issues all year. These men are professional baseball players. We need have full confidence that they will make the proper adjustments.
So, the Phillies will need to take care of business in game 6. they had pettite on the ropes in game 3, they just need to put him away.

All this hating on Hamels. Tsk, tsk. Undeserved. Hamels and many of his teammates had a hard time dealing with the highs of a World Championship to the grind and occasional adversities of the regular season. That's exactly why he said he can't wait 'til 2009 is over. If the Phillies somehow win this World Series, you won't see them celebrating for the next four months like last year.
