Heh, yeah, “belated” is the word, but thanks anyway. So far – although admittedly it hasn’t been long – I have mustered a little more dignity than Jack Benny.
Let’s see how dignified I remain by the time I hit 61. Or maybe I’ll just add an asterisk to it.

In the local media, he has said that he would take on minority partners, while maintaining a controlling interest WITHOUT incurring any debt to do so, so that would mean a rather large chunk of change from his own piggy bank. He said basically the same thing about the Rangers. But it all reverts back to Bud and his buds not wanting anyone around to try to do things differently than they’ve been done since the DH came into being….
As much as many of us would like to see some fresh ideas and and a lack of reverence for the heirarchy of the game, it probably will never happen as long as the current crop of owners rules things….

Cash? Cuban is very smart, and I suspect he’d do a deal like this mostly with OPM (Other People’s Money).

I’m not sure how much cash he *does* have, though. It’s probably more than the McCourts, sure, but is it enough? I could be wrong, but I seem to recall him explaining what all went down with the Cubs sale last year, and it mostly ended up being “we were going to take on a lot of debt and then the economy tanked and no banks wanted to give out that kind of money anymore.” That kind of makes me wonder if he does have the kind of cash that MLB (and the hard-up McCourts) would want.

If given to fantasizing – and what newly 60-year-old isn’t (even though we’re talking about baseball at the moment) – I suppose I would play off my projections of Cuban as the new Charley Finley against Cuban as the new George Steinbrenner. Such pleasant reveries will have to do until or unless he gets his shot and can establish his idiosyncrasies on their own terms.
