Any chance at all that even if the Yanks offer a big deal contract, they will be sensible and not offer five years? I think it’s foolish to offer any pitcher over 30 more than four. I think it’s even more foolish to offer a pitcher with any sort of injury history more than three.

Lackey is lucky in a sense that he’s going to get all that money from someone if for no other reason than this is a weak free agent class this year. He’s one of the better of the available free agent. Had he been a free agent last season with the likes of Burnett and CC available, Lackey would have been lucky to just get a fraction of what they got. Still, if a trade isn’t too prohibitive as far as whom we’d have to give up, I’d personally still like to trade for Roy Halladay. Before the end of the next season, Halladay would, in my opinion, definitely prove to be our #1A starter.

You also have to think about Lackey’s temper, he’s known for commanding his way around games and arguing with both the umps and sciosia himself. However, with that killer sinker, I’d love for the Yanks to take him.

Why are people still hung up on Wang? The guys 15 minutes are over. His salary for 2009 was 5 mil…an awful lot for a starter that went 1-6 witha 4.16 era.

Seriously? First, chill on the ALLCAPS, man. From one Yanks fan to another, you need to focus on the facts:
1) It’s “Burnett”. Time to know how to spell his name.
2) Wang is about to be non-tendered and is coming off major shoulder surgery. It’s no certainty that he’ll resign with the Yanks AT ALL. And if he does, he won’t be ready for Spring Training.
3) Chad Gaudin, in case you don’t remember, wasn’t worth starting in the playoffs yet you want to rely on him all year?
4) Resigning their free agents to sensible offers: that is 100% true.
5) It’s going to be Hughes and Joba to try to develop as a starter. Don’t be surprised to see if Kennedy can return from aneurysm surgery, too.

Since when is velocity the end-all-be-all of measuring a pitcher’s ability. Greg Maddux couldn’t even hit 91 with his fastball and we won over 350 games. Apparently velocity didn’t matter to him that much. Also, Burnett’s curveball is a much better pitch than his fastball, even though he throws a hard fastball. At least Lackey can control his 91 mph heater.

although I will say that all the starts he made prior to the past two years shouldn’t necessarily be weighed all that heavily, since that was before he got hurt (think Matsui’s consecutive games played streak prior to breaking his wrist and his health thereafter) …

Why does no one mention Lackey’s elbow injuries the past two seasons? Having both he and Burnett locked up to long term deals in the rotation is just begging for one or both to get seriously injured for part of, an entire, or multiple seasons.

Agreed, Craig. This is their first “soft” line drawn, something for all other clubs to see if they can leap past.
Lackey, like Burnett, has a bit of an injury history, though Lackey’s hasn’t been as serious. He made only 51 starts the last 2 years after 5 years straight of 33/year. A concern?
Yes, a rotation with Lackey, CC, Burnett, Pettitte and one of Hughes or Joba (whomever they want to botch in ’10) is one you usually only see in fantasy baseball.

The other part of this equation is that the Yankees have historically tried to get anyone who has been a thorn in their side, particularly AL East, however Angels will more than do. Also seems like they’re tired of the Halladay nonsense.
