Just because things used to be a certain way, doesn’t make them better.

True statement. However, the same also applies to the “new and improved”. The extended playoff format, late start times and unnecessary off days were not introduced to rectify some great wrong like the exclusion of non-white players. They were accepted as the price for getting top dollar from the networks. There’s nothing stopping Selig and the owners from taking less money from the networks in return for more control over the scheduling of post-season games. Think it will happen? Neither do I.

One of the problems is not with the number of games in the regular season; it’s with the number of days. Once upon a time teams played double-headers intentionally. You could buy a ticket and sit through both games (which, by the way, was probably shorter than one game is today).

And subway tokens cost five cents, and minorities couldn’t play baseball, and women couldn’t vote, etc. Just because things used to be a certain way, doesn’t make them better.

Also, make both the division and league playoff series best 3-of-5. Oh, my bad; I was thinking of this as a game. It stopped being that when they split the leagues up into divisions. Never mind.

When the Commish does something it usually means a denial or a screw-up. MLB is the only sport where a stupid all star game decides who get home field advantage for the World Series. Mind you the only one. From Little League to NFL,NBA & NHL it is decided by who has the best record at the end. Do you really expect him to stand up to Fox or TBS? He caved on the all star game, because of Fox’s dismal ratings over the boring ass all star game. This guy made 17 million last year, you tell me if he will change anything other than his paycheck going up.

They need to shorten the season and the number of games and get playoffs and world series concluded in October. It’s getting too cold in November anyway to be playing baseball. It’s ridiculous. Who cares if it’s overlapping football, but geez, baseball is a summer sport, not winter. Bud Selig won’t get it done though – he doesn’t do anything.

After championing obscenities like the designated hitter, letting the All Star Game determine homefield advantage for the Series after whole teams play their guts out for six months to post the best season’s record and lose that advantage over a game with which they collectively had nothing to do, and thinking he was making some kind of point to Pete Rose while the alltime hit leader of baseball is running around with 22-year-old hotties and challenging George Burns for the crown of Dirtiest Old Man while Selig needs a special aide to change his Depends, it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if the Commissioner’s solution was to make all the postseason games seven innings long.

Darrell is correct. The playoff schedule does not do justice to MLB when the schedule allows teams to ride a couple of hot pitchers. This needs to be addressed quickly.
As for it overlapping with NFL this is unavoidable and should not have any bearing on the schedule. Heck, there are enough commercial breaks in football that you could watch most the baseball game between them anyways!

I confess that I lost interest in the World Series this year; it just ran too far into the meat of football season. How about curtailing the inter-league schedule a couple games, go to a 160-game schedule, and please schedule playoffs just like the regular season. Then the deeper rotations that earned their way into the playoffs would still be a valid factor; now two hot pitchers can get you to the World Series.

I’m guessing the former problem–days off in the middle of a series–will be an easier one to resolve than the latter, the days off after a pair of quickly concluded series. I think the league is going to need to retain firm start dates for each round no matter how much they want to tighten things up, if only because you know they’re going to want to keep a firm start date for the World Series–which means you’re either going to get your days off earlier, in the case of two teams finishing quickly and waiting around, or later, when _everybody_ around is waiting for date for the World Series opener to arrive.
