I started to wonder if maybe global warming might be part of Atkins' problem, but it occurred to me that if the air in Denver was warmed it would become lighter, so more pronounced resistance to Atkins' quails wouldn't account for all his fly balls taken in the infield.
All that notwithstanding, Atkins is exactly the sort of player that the skinflint management of the Marlins loves - previously damaged or outworn, headed for the scrapheap, but with maybe one more surprisingly good season left to be coaxed out of him, and obtainable at bargain rates. He would give the Feesh the excuse they are doubtless looking for to unload Jorge Cantu before some goddamned arbitrator orders the team to cough up his actual market value. And who knows? Breathing that richly oxygenated sea level air might just be the invigorating influence Atkins needs to get his fly balls out of the infield again.
