Part of the reason it was made was because Garza was considered a clubhouse cancer and Gardy felt Bartlett was uncoachable or something. He hated all the errors Bartlett made, despite the fact that he got to everything hit up the middle.

I actually always liked this deal for the Rays – Bartlett was going to help at SS, no idea that much and Garza was talented.
Young was just overrated – what about his bat did people love? average? yea its ok, OBP? really no, slugging? so he hit a few home runs in his rookie year, he was still out-slugged that year by Pedroia. When Pedroia out-slugs you, you are not a power bat.
I didn’t think the Rays would get as much out of Garza as they did, but I was fairly confident Young was no loss.

“The Rays didn’t even have fans yet…” Nice jab at a young team. But, looking back at the Rays the last two seasons, I can’t imagine a team without Barty or Garza. Morlan has pretty much been a bust never making it higher then AA- Montgomery. At the time, I was not happy, I thought Harris was better bat then Barty, and I thought the world of Delmon Young. Two years later, I am glad I was dead wrong. Garza will be great, maybe even win a Cy Young. Thanks again Bill Smith.
