Quote of the day: Pujols, the Cardinals, and reinforcements

Nov 29, 2009, 4:08 PM EDT

“He has always
made it clear that his drive is to win. That’s why he’s the great
player he is. But
you can’t do it alone. He knows that. We know that. He wants to be sure
that we’re going to have a competitive team, and that is our objective
every year. We do have an excellent core of players in place. But we
need to add to it. And not only this year, but down the road,
too. It’s a matter of demonstrating to Albert that we are going to do
that on an ongoing basis.”

- Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. knows he needs to secure some reinforcements for Albert Pujols to remain in St. Louis. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

Color me dubious. If they were serious about this, they would have signed Alex Gonzalez.

Signed him for what purpose? He’s a guy who gets by on the strength of his defensive reputation more than anything else, and the Cards already have a gold glove caliber shortstop in Brendan Ryan, who will cost them about 2 million less this year. Not to mention probably put up a higher OPS.

Uh-huh. Don’t they all say that. Cardinals have a team payroll of about 80 mill or less. Doubtful they will pay more. To win they will have get their players to accept less than what they are worth. They should try to find new revenue sources so they can pay their ballplayers.

    Old Tator,
Might want to check your facts,,,payroll has been in the ~105-110 million range the last few years..but a lot of that has been dead money for players on the long term DL/injured list….but yeah..there gonna have to shell out some money to protect Albert’s bat….and playing in STL has some benefits..check Matt’s stats in Oakland before joining the Cardinals….that’s not a coincidence

  6. Old Tator - Nov 29, 2009 at 7:18 PM

From MLB.com 2009 Cardinals payroll 88,528,411. CBS sports same number. USA today 77,605,109. AP sports 88,528,411. About.com 77,605,109. You might want to check your facts.
