Teixeira kept saying from his college days on that he wanted to return to his hometown of Baltimore. He did nothing more than give them a cursory meeting. Boras had planned for him to be in NY as soon as he was eligible for free agency.
Posada is about done and the Yankees need a catcher. Their payroll is down and they have money to burn. They’ll make Mauer the highest played catcher in the game, and one of the highest (maybe the highest) in all of baseball.

Mauer’s agent kept Ripken in Baltimore his entire career and Puckett in Minnesota his entire career and neither of them made peanuts. Puckett got the biggest contract in history at the time (though he probably could have gotten more elsewhere).

Rumors and $5 will get you a cup of Starbucks. If the Twinkies are serious and that keeps Mauer in Mn so be it. The longer they play around the greater the risk. Like Yogi said “It ain’t over till the fat lady sings” I’m just saying!

The Twins are rumored to possibly offer him approximately $20 million or so per season in a 7 to 10 year contract. I hardly call that offer peanuts.

Don’t let the “He’s a Minnesota boy and always will be” carry too much weight. Professional sports is about the $$$$. The agent for Mauer is NOT going to let him sign for peanuts because it impacts his commission also. The Pittsburgh Penguins thought they could retain Ryan Malone because he was not only a Pittsburgh boy but had grown up in the Penguin organization. They offered him peanuts and he is now playing for Tampa Bay Lightning. OK- different sport, different personality but the message is the same. The Twinkies better not get caught sitting on their checkbooks.

Steve is absolutely right. Mauer will be a Twin. It’s nothing more than a negotiating ploy. Both sides need to employ that to get the best deal possible for both sides. It’s called maximizing your leverage. Joe Mauer is going nowhere. He will be a Minnesota Twin. And yes, he should be.

No way Mauer ever leaves the Twins. He’s a hometown Minnesota Boy who has higher baseball priorities than getting absolute top dollar on a contract. The Twins know full well they can’t afford to let him leave and will not try to lowball him either. No doubt whatsoever that Mauer will be a Twin for life.
