Quote of the day: Dave Cameron on the Polanco deal

Dec 3, 2009, 2:20 PM EDT

It’s usually hard to detect sarcasm on Twitter, but not so much here:

Polanco is Beltre
without power, experience at third, and a few more years of age. I can
totally see why Amaro would prefer Polanco . . .

I agree with Cameron. A year at $6 million or a couple of lower dollar years of Polanco may make some sense when weighed against a longer-term deal for Beltre. But three-years and $18 million is a head scratcher.

Cameron’s spot-on here. Makes little sense. Wouldn’t Beltre be MUCH better? Better offensively and PROVEN stud defensively

If signed to the same contract, then yes, the Phillies would have prefered Beltre based on age. It remains to be seen whether or not Amaro actually overpaid for Polanco, however. If Beltre gets 8-10 Mil for 4 years, then I’d prefer Polanco if I’m in the Phillies shoes. Especially if this means that Polanco could spell Utley at times and give Dobbs a few more at bats. Also, considering the Phillies could use a more situational hitter and not another K machine, the Polanco signing while no bargain, makes more sense in team context as opposed to FanGraph value.

Plus some teams just cannot stand the stench of dealing with Scott Boras.

This is a good share. Thank you!
