Six Lessons from Day One

Dec 8, 2009, 9:18 AM EDT

Rotoworld’s Drew Silva provides the six lessons he learned from Day One of the Winter Meetings.

I’m going to find Frank Rizzo and tell him that Drew called his move with Pudge “stupid,” and then point to some MLB.com writer and say that he’s Silva.  That should be fun.

Characterizing that Pudge signing as “stupid” is being polite. And it looks like the M’s are serious about loading up for next season. I wonder if they’d also go out there and sign Hidecki Matsui? If nothing else, it would generate some revenue from his Japanese fans.

If you’re talking about the Nats’ GM, it’s Mike Rizzo, not Frank.
Did we really just post the worst record in MLB and give up two draft picks for Brian Bruney and Ivan Rodriguez? Are we sure Bowden isn’t still calling the shots?

Frank Rizzo was the former mayor/police commissioner of Philadelphia. Very colorful guy but not interchangeable with Mike Rizzo..at least, I didn’t think so.
If you take the amount of money out of the equation, Pudge may not be a terrible fit for the Nats (and a young pitching staff and a young catcher) if draft picks aren’t involved. However, the team certainly has a cavern in the bullpen, but it’s hard to believe that Brian Bruney could possibly be more than a pebble.
