The Mets and Luis Castillo

Dec 8, 2009, 11:58 AM EDT

The New York Times’ Ben Shpigel asks why the Mets seem insistent on dealing Luis Castillo.  Seems like an easy call to me: he has no range he has no power, he makes too much money, and there are actually teams out there who might want to deal for him. The real question, it seems, is why Omar Minaya called Castillo the Mets’ “most valuable player” for 2009 last week.

Um, because they want to trade him? 😉

Expensive and without power…then why the hell did they want to take Juan Pierre in a deal for him? Then they’ll really be up a creek in the power department because they’re not snagging any 2B who can slug for 28-30 HR’s.

Duh! of course he was the 2009 Mets player of the year,(Ha, Ha), Omar Minaya is several bricks short of a load, but he is not quite the dumbest GM out there, he is close though!

Probably my favorite regular season moment of the year!

Castillo hit reasonably well last year, and was something of a clubhouse leader on a team that fell to pieces. Given that Wright – who is a much better player – still seems to be unwilling to lead, and that the other players who were leaders were hurt a long while, Castillo really did have some value. (How do you determine a bad team’s MVP, though?)
And while his screw-up in that Subway Series game is reason enough to not want him fielding, how he handled it was mature and reasonable. There is a place for him in baseball. It’s just not playing second for the Mets. But I liked him last season.

Last week Omar Minaya called Alex Cora “probably their MVP of 2009″.

Yeah, because trading Luis Castillo will make EVERYTHING
    better for the METS…
