The Mets still have a good team when healthy. This past year they had $89 million in payroll on the DL. If the Yankees and Phillies had lost comparable players to the DL, they too would have watched the post-season from their couches/hospital rooms. As for going after the big 3 free agents other publications have been saying they were in on Lackey and Holliday since the beginning of the off-season. According to other sources, when they saw the way the free agent pitching market was developing, and the money being thrown at 2nd tier free-agent hurlers, it got them to put Lackey higher on their wish list. Calling it a reactive move is a great theory and, in a world where access to other sources doesn't exist, a viable theory.

Once the Yankees said they are trimming payroll (yet to be determined), it puts Boras in a very tough spot. If they Yankees are out of most free agent dealings, and by the looks of what they got it seems that way, then Boras has very few teams to put against each other. Only the Red Sox are left with a need for Bay or Holliday so they can now take their time in negotiations, or pull a page out of the Yankees' book and trade for a corner OF. (Vernon Wells, Quentin, Gary Mathews Jr. come to mind - and heck, even Alfonso Soriano could be had if the deal is right)

The problem with the Mets, other than ownership, manager, gm, players, shortstop, 3rd baseman, etc... is that all three "big" free agents can come over and they will still stink. No 1B, a 100 year old 2B, a CF that no one wants to talk about as far as lack of leadership, no corner OFs (but that can be solved if they get Bay and Holliday). What will they have in their rotation from 3-5? Can you really trust their pen?
Wanna change the Mets? Start at the top

How do we really know what their strategy really is? From reporters and Twitterers? Doesn't seem they know much. It now says the Mets haven't even met yet with Molina's people so where did this 2 year 12 mil "offer" come from?
How do we know whether the will or won't spend? I think 99.9999 percent of what is reported is bull crap or complete speculation.

The problem with the Mets -- IMO -- is that they need Lackey AND either Bay or Holliday .... just one will not do it and is as good as none at this point.
The team is a mess .... they need to solidfy the rotation behind Santana and fortify the offense with some power ... one or the other is a band aid and will just continue to add to the frustration of failure and frustration with this team.

Given that the Mets seemed determined to do as little as possible, reactive is not a bad thing. Isn't there a theory that the AL on the whole is better because everyone is trying to keep up with the Yankees? Why not the Mets, too?
Of course, if they were trying to keep up with the Phils, I'd be happier. But if the Mets get one of the big three, I will be happy.
