I would hate to lose Mike Lowell. He is a very classy player with the right mind set for the game, and a great clubhouse guy. That being said, his health and ability to play on a consistent basis are definitely questionable. I doubt it's worth the money to keep two DH's, but for the Sox to count on David Ortiz as their primary DH again this year seems to me to be the height of hubris. In fact, I would sooner see us shopping for a big bat DH even if it meant eating BOTH Papi's and Lowell's salaries. They are wonderful men who have been an inspiration to the Sox fans. But everyone has his/her time, and theirs is past, Love and thanks to both players for the gutsy way they have played the game with their whole hearts. Time to rest now . . . . move over and let the team go after someone who still has his A game.

If Lowell can't play third base, and reasonably well, I simply don't see the attraction to anyone, even if the Red Sox were to eat half his salary. He showed precious little mobility at third last year and doesn't hit well enough to play 1B or serve as a fulltime DH.
I think the Red Sox are stuck with him as a very expensive platoon DH.

Best news I have heard in awhile. Lowell can still play some 3B - not sure if he will ever again be healthy enough to platoon - and he would make a very decent DH somewhere. Which means that he is limited to the American League, but so be it. Hope he lands on his feet. Sox would still need to eat some of his contract, but right now they also need to get more value out of 3B/DH, with Youk platooning at 1B with V-Mart.
