What you suggest is clever, and if true, would make sense. However, nothing the Mets do anymore is either clever or sensical. I think you are giving them way to much credit here. They have adopted this "patch it with duct tape" philospophy the last couple of years, and rather than rebuild this franchise, continue to make noise, but do nothing. They need outfielders after Beltran (Unless you really believe in Francouer and Pagan), a rotation after Santana, a first baseman, and a catcher. They throw money at players no one else wants (Oliver Perez, Castillo...), yet so far their big signing are Coste, Blanco and Alex Cora. I can't really beleive that they are smart enough to have devised any plan at all, let alone trying to set the market for Holiday by pushing Bay to the Red Sox. Do you?

Maybe I am wrong, but I really don't think the Mets make moves just to get themselves on the back pages of the tabloids.
They just make bad moves, period.

I don't think Omar Minaya is intelligent enough to be cynical. He made a stupid offer to Bay just to say he did. Can they just say goodbye to Delgado, sign a serviceable 1B and go get Holliday? No, that would make sense. Looking for another train wreck in Queens in 2010 (and no, I do not mean the 7 train).

The fact that Omar Minaya is STILL the GM of the Mets shows a complete lack of management ability on the part of the Wilpons .One can't fairly blame Minaya for the Verdun-like casualty list the Mets produced last year , but one can blame him for not having any capable prospects in the system who could be called up , for not having any bench whatsoever at the major league level , for having an idiot like Tony Bernazard as his assistant , and Jerry Manuel as manager . Minaya's attack on the reporter who reported Bernazard's retarded actions at the press conference announcing his firing was very much a case of shooting the messenger , and was such a PR fiasco that the Wilpons were remiss in not firing him too , on the spot .

Or maybe you are all wrong and Minaya put a conservative, yet higher, bid than the Sox in hopes that the Sox will sign Bay already and in turn take Bay off the board AND set the market price for Holliday, who the Mets really want. Taking the Sox out of the equation leaves the Mets to bid against the Card who they most certainly can bid with.
think people. Don't go for the low hanging apples.

And apparently you won't find any difference of opinion anywhere in the area, including a lukewarm column from Klapich in the Record.
This may cause more fan defection than end-of-season collapses or"injury excuse" early-exits ever did. Hey, more space for Universe followers during inter-league.
