"Would the Yankees seriously go to war with an outfield of Granderson, Swisher and the three-headed-mediocrity monster that is Cabrera-Gardner-Hoffmann?"
Why does everyone on the roster have to be a star? The Yankees used to platoon LF when they were winning WS regularly in the late 90's. You need role players and who knows, maybe Gardner can hit .300 for an entire season, as he did for a stretch in the beginning of 2009, and become an everyday leadoff hitter. In any case, the Yanks have plenty of run producers, my complaint with the Granderson deal was that they didn't get a guy who was going to get on base ahead of those run producers, they got another guy that we're going to sit around and wait for a HR from. They need role players, guys who are going to get on base, move runners when they need to manufacture a run, steal some bases, put pressure on the defense, all good teams have those guys.

You know what, if they can't get Damon back for what they want, I bet that's exactly who they do go to war with, understanding that they'll still have an excellent shot at the AL East and the Wild Card if they go with those guys for three months and then make a deadline deal to pick up someone better for the stretch run. Cabrera-Gardner-Hoffman is who you send in the first wave to trigger the land mines. Then you send in Carlos Quentin to clean up.

I don't believe for a second that they won't sign Holliday. I mean, why wouldn't they? They have a huge hole in LF and basically an unlimited budget. Melky Cabrera probably wouldn't be the worst everyday LF in the majors although I'm sure he would be close. WHy would you settle for that if you didn't have to?

I agree with Mike.
Last year's outfield was Swisher, Damon and the "mediocrity monster" that was Cabrera-Gardner, with much success.
I would not be surprised however, if they pursue other options, even if Damon doesn't return.

What's wrong with melky in left he's a better left fielder than Damon ya Damon I'd better at the plate. If u don't remember melky was an everyday starter!
Would the Yankees seriously go to war with an outfield of Granderson, Swisher and the three-headed-mediocrity monster that is Cabrera-Gardner-Hoffmann?
Last year the outfield was Damon melky swisher and they won the world series. Do u think they need more offense????

But the extra time on the ground worked out for the best, because he got to talk to Brian Cashman, who revealed that the Yankees don't plan on signing anyone else for a while, taking a slow, wait and see approach in the wake of a busy week at the Winter Meetings.

While this may be true, Cashman also said the following things in previous years:
Crosby is our starting CF (then got Damon)
Nick Swisher is our starting 1b (then got Tex)

C'mon, adding Hoffman to that list is silly.
Everyone bitches that the Yanks "need to have an all-star" at every position, yet when they don't, they're mocked. I'm fine with Melky/Gardner playing LF.

The Universe does the most when they say they're doing nothing at all. The question (no mystery) is who Boras wants to sign most- Damon or Holliday? And the longer this plays out, the more obvious it will become- it's Holliday, leaving Johnny to take what the Yanks will ultimately give him, which won't be unfair either.
