Braves non-tender Johnson and Church

Dec 12, 2009, 2:29 PM EDT

As expected, the Braves have non-tendered second baseman Kelly Johnson and outfielder Ryan Church.
Church was designated for assignment earlier this week in order to make
room for newly-acquired right-hander Rafael Soriano on the 40-man
roster.

Johnson batted .224/.303/.389
with eight home runs and 29 RBI in 303 at-bats in ’09, while Church hit
.273/.338/.384 with four home runs and 40 RBI in 359 at-bats between
the Braves and Mets.

I have a weird feeling that Larry Beinfest’s nose began itching when Ryan Church was non-tendered. Church is exactly the kind of player the Feesh love – susceptible to a one-year contract and an opportunity to “prove” themselves again, yet still with middle decent numbers and still full of “potential.” And you know what happens to guys who come down here: they put up a career year and then go to a real baseball team someplace else. It’s still pretty conservative down here, what with all the…uh…Caribbean bad memories and all, but even with Elian heading up the Young Communists League back home, sometimes the Feesh look like a collective farm for the rest of baseball. Like Margo sings, “Irony, oh irony, it is never lost on me.”
