UPDATE: flunked physical report debunked; Halladay-Lee deal final; press conferences scheduled

Dec 16, 2009, 3:01 PM EDT

UPDATE:  All of that business about the flunked physicals from a couple of hours ago is totally bogus. Everyone is fine, Selig still has to sign off on the $6 million going to Philly, but  the deal is done and the Phillies and Mariners are going to have press conferences announcing the deals later this afternoon.

Just another day in the blogosphere.

12:55 P.M.
Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun just tweeted that someone involved in the blockbuster trade between the Jays, Phillies and Mariners flunked their physical.

This sounds rather dramatic — a flunked physical can derail a deal — but it may not be a big problem. Generally speaking, teams have the ability to waive physicals as conditions to deals, and often do. Not when they find that a guy is missing his coccyx or something, but for minor things.

To my knowledge, none of the guys involved in this deal had anything major on the radar, so this could be nothing.  We’ll obviously update you if something develops.

UPDATE: It wasn’t Lee or Halladay.  It was one of the minor leaguers.

I’m guessin Aumont, didn’t he have shoulder problems last season?

  2. Howie Dart - Dec 16, 2009 at 2:34 PM

Michael Taylor had been sent home from Mexico where he was playing winter baseball. It may or may not be serious enough to derail the deal

  3. Bud Selig - Dec 16, 2009 at 3:48 PM

I flunked the damned physical. When I bent over, my wallet, holding the 16 million a year I “earn” fell out of my pants and disconnected my colonoscopy bag.
(Colon Oscopy in NOT in any way related to the really fat guy also named Colon)

There is something fishy here craig. Why would you trade Lee this hastily?
That’s 4 starting pitchers. Moyer isn’t cutting it for 2011. Who is the next piece of this puzzle? I have a feeling there is a reason they had to get rid of Lee who wanted a long term deal after this season. They must be making room to sign a pitcher who doesn’t draw a 20 million dollar salary, Maybe a 10-12 million dollar or less salary for 3 years??? Seriously that’s all that makes sense to me. Any more decent pitchers that have last names begin with “H”? Ok, that’s not important, but they did get 6 million dollars and 3 prospects to possibly deal…. I see another deal in the near future for a SP. I don’t see Amaro leaving it up to Moyer to fill that spot. And there has to be a real reason to offload Lee when he’s going to make 9 million in 2011 (minus 6 mill remember). Hmmmmmmmmmm????? More trading?????
