While i think Silva will benefit moving to the NL but at the end of the day i think you keep your fingers crossed that he is a .500 pitcher at the end of the season.

If you parse this FJM-style you’ll see Bert is right on:
1. “if he’s healthy, a guy that could pitch 200 innings for them” – sure it may be 150 runs and 300 hits later, but a healthy 30-yr old guy could certainly pitch this many innings for a team that has him under contract.
2. “very good control” – For major league batters to be able to get nearly 1,400 hits and collectively hit over .300 against someone, it goes without saying they must be able to hurl the ball repeatedly over the plate, at least the fat part.
3. “He’s a contact-type pitcher” – see #2 above.
With this type of ability, all the character stuff is simply a bonus… “as long as he’s healthy”.

You miss option (c): that Silva played for the Twins, was fairly competent for much of his tenure with the Twins, and Bert (1) is a complete homer and (2) undoubtedly has not paid attention to anything involving Silva since, oh, 2006.

Any Twins fan will tell you the only surprising thing here is that Bert didn’t mention the importance of “keeping the ball down.” Although he did mention sinking fastballs twice.

When I first saw this headline I thought it was ‘Carlos Silva is Batter.’ And I thought, ‘yup, that’s about right’
