I’m not saying Beltran is the best or Santana is the best, but they both have performed well, and are not the reason for the decline. It would be foolish to move either Santana or Beltran, but everyone else should be available for the right trade.

I agree completely with Bob Klapisch. It’s funny reading these comments from deluded Mets fans who think their team is good, or nearly good. They are horrible, really horrible, and have been for a long time. Obviously they need huge, radical changes, and dealing a couple of players for a slew of top prospects could really turn the team around. To be honest though, as someone who doesn’t root for the Mets, I hope they keep their core, and maybe add a star or two. That way they’ll continue to have losing records for the next 5-10 years.

The Mets fans think they have most talent in the league. What they have is the most overpaid players in the league. The fish rots from the head. BTW, the Mets have NO money to make any major FA signing this year and even if they did they would simply overpay whoever they signed. If Beltran is the best CF in the league (or even his division) then Nats will win it all this year.

Bob Klapisch, if I recall, has a bit of a history in terms of run ins with the players and team officials. If memory serves, he had unfettered access to the Mets in the early nineties, a used the info gained to write a tough book. He then came back the next year as was shocked when Bonilla and other players were not happy with him. A good journalist does not wake up looking for scores to settle. But, we did not say he is a good journalist.

Sorry, Klap-trap writes stupid stuff about the Yankees as well. Don’t make this a Yankee Fan Met’s hater thing. The guy is a hack.
If you want to say Beltran is the best center fielder in baseball. Fine. As a fan of the team and given the extraordinary talent Beltran has, you have that right.
The point is however, Klap-Trap is an idiot with no idea what he is talking about

Actually Spice Beltran is the best CF he has the best arm and tracks down balls in the gap better then any other CF going over the fence 4 a rare catch 2 rob a HR doesnt make u the best CF like Torri or Gomez. Beltran is consistant out there and catches everything thats what makes u great

I am not a Mets fan by any means. That said. Klap-trap is an idiot. The mets need to keep Santana (still young and highly effective, one of the 3 or 4 best pitchers in baseball) Wright and Reyes and put a team around them. Trading them is not an answer. Building around them is. The Mets have the money to go out and get the missing pieces.
Nothing about Santana has failed. He has been year in and year out one of the best in baseball. The trade is still a steal. None of the players given up for Santana have proven anything on the MLB level.
Beltran has been fine, not the “best center fielder in baseball” that the Met fans thought they were getting but damned good.
Build around this core. Get a first baseman, get some bullpen and starting rotation help.
Klap-trap know less about baseball than he does about writing and I thought that was impossible.

Huh? Santana is 29-16 with a 2.78 era w/o much offensive support. He has pitched very well. If he pitched the exact same way for the Yankees he’d be like 44-16.
Beltran was injured half of last season. With the Mets he has three gold gloves. In 677 games he hit .281 with 127 hrs and 477 rbis along with 167 doubles 12 triples and 94 sb.
The Mets have made many bad acquisitions, but Santana and Beltran are NOT among them.

I’ll guarantee you the last thing David Wright wants is a trade. He’s been a Mets fan his whole life and wearing that uniform is all he has ever wanted to do in baseball. He grew up watching the Tides (remember them – Mets AAA team for 38 years till Omar ruined the relationship with their management by ignoring them)at Met Park and later at Harbor Park, and watching the Mets on cable. Klapisch must never have talked to Wright about what being a Met means to him.
