Jason Michaels is the envy of MLB outfielders, for now

Dec 19, 2009, 10:59 AM EDT

Here’s a surprising tidbit. Jayson Stark of writes that Mike Cameron, Andruw Jones and Jason Michaels are the only outfielders to sign major league contracts this winter.
He doesn’t count Ken Griffey Jr. since he re-signed with the Mariners
before hitting the market, nor does he include Hideki Matsui, who
didn’t play a single game in the outfield last season.

Who’s left on the market? Matt
Holliday, Jason Bay and Johnny Damon are three of the most-talked
about, of course, but there are plenty more looking for new homes,
including Marlon Byrd, Jermaine Dye, Jack Cust, Jonny Gomes, Rick
Ankiel, Coco Crisp, Xavier Nady and even Vladimir Guerrero and Gary
Sheffield, though they would probably be more useful as designated

Clubs may be saving money for next year, when the crop is better.

yes, the top of do not get it. Byrd is seeing the truth and may beat V.Guerrero to signing a contract. Since V.G. may join John Lackey on the Red Sox. He wants a full time shot at the Of, but he hates to lose. And going witht hte team that beats him, and will let him play some rf/lf and dh. and take a shot at the playoffs, (WS) he is thinking it over.Lackey may be right..

At this rate, the American League is going to run out of available jobs for designated hitters about as fast as Bangladesh runs out of gravesites following a major cyclone. I’m glad the Players’ Association wants to protect the DH, baseball’s answer to Medicare Part B, but don’t they believe in turnover? The minor league franchises that belong to the AL teams are chock full of kids who can actually field their positions but are being held back by the duffers on the cybernetic knee ligaments. It’s beginning to look like the magma plume under Yellowstone down there.
