The Red Sox can't be happy with Mike Lowell right now

Dec 20, 2009, 6:43 PM EDT

During an appearance on Sirius XM’s MLB Home Plate on Sunday morning, Red Sox assistant general manager Ben Cherington addressed the right thumb condition that nixed a possible trade of Mike Lowell to the Rangers:

“Even at the end of the playoffs, in our exit physical, he barely made
mention of it,” Cherington said in the interview. “It’s just one of
those things as a player you get used to being a little dinged up at
the end of the season. I think that’s how he felt it. And then Mike, as
many players do, sort of took his customary break after the season, let
the body heal and then when he went to pick up a bat again recently as
per his normal schedule he still felt a little bit in there and so
wanted to get it checked out.”

With surgery now scheduled for the
thumb, get used to hearing the Red Sox saying very complimentary things
about Lowell. It will be a constant theme between now and spring
training. You’ll hear about the wonderful progress he is making on his
rehab, or how the Red Sox are confident he’ll be even better than he
was last season. They’ll say whatever they can to boost his value
headed into spring training.

But while you hear these things, you have
to understand how frustrated the Red Sox are with Lowell for not having
the problem addressed sooner. Not only because of the nixed trade, but
what might have happened had the Red Sox stayed with the status quo.
Lowell likely wouldn’t have had the thumb examined during the offseason at
all had Texas not tentatively agreed to a trade. They have every reason
to be be furious with Lowell, even if they will say otherwise publicly.

UPDATE: FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal predicts that “Mike Lowell will never play another game for the Red
Sox” regardless of whether or not the trade with the Rangers is truly dead. He writes that they’re unlikely to simply release Lowell, but “eventually will complete the kind of deal they
tried to make with the Rangers, paying most of Lowell’s salary to
make him disappear.”

This is way wrong to report that the Red Sox “WILL NEVER” let Lowell play another game. How foolish this is to say. Yes, thay most likely are ticked with him. But thay are smart enought to turn it into a postive and save some cash as well.
Have lowell come to boston the have the thumb checked out by there team doc’s.(after the first of the year) Then if really needed, have the slice and diced job done befor the end of the month. oops reporting is just a week or 2 (early) away.. No Biggy. he is realy hurt, and will need 6 to 8 weeks miny to heal. Thay have a 60day Dl for this. Medical insurance pays most of the cost,”including base pay”.. Oh, yes he needs rehab for hand and leg. Extended spring training and team medical are already in place.
He will be fully ready and healty some time late April early May at the lates when other players start to get hurt. A nice chip to trade fully healthy ready to go ex-ws-MVP. with gold glove ability at 3rd rested.Or Theo can just use him as needed with Boston.

Very typical of the redsuks, they always kick their heros to the curb like this.

Can’t wait for Yuk to be next…..

Good call DJ – Lowell’s behavior was unprofessional but the Sox can’t do anything about it since they need to maintain his reputation. Moreso than performance, that $3 million they weren’t going to eat in the Texas deal comes from reputational value.
Arendell – Mike Lowell will never play another inning in Boston unless Kevin Youkilis, Victor Martinez, Casey Kotchman, Lars Anderson and Theo Epstein all go down in a plane together. Oh, and disable your CAPS lock, quotes would have done just fine.
Hop and Who’s Next? – Just stop typing. Or thumbing. Or whatever it is you’re doing. You may think it’s cute and funny to jump out of the chorus line and harmonize your ignorant hatred in full throat – but everyone else just thinks you’re a couple of uneducated jackholes.
With the notable exception of Old Gator (may God bless his remaining brain cells and agitate them into writing more often) the quality of posting has gone down considerably since the exodus from Newsvine.

Hop and Who’s Next have every right to express their viewpoints. You are not the police for who can post. Everyone else does not think they are a couple of uneducated jackholes. Listen to the hater calling others haters. I like peaches, but you are the pits.

Oh Get Over It! I’m glad he’s staying. Who’s this Cherington guy, as if his name is a household word! If his thumbs bothering him, fix it. He’s not a young man anymore, his aches and pains come and go. I think we should trade Cherington. I didn’t want Lowell to go anywhere. He’s put in his time with the sox, he desearves to retire with them. Maybe Cherington should start asking the other players about their aches and pains and stop whining about Mike Lowell.

Much ado about nothing, imho. He gets surgery and we move him then. If not, he can become part of a L/R platoon at 1st with Kotchman.

It’s nice to have all you New York losers back out in the big world again. What rock have all of you front-running fairweather idiots been hiding under since 2000? Doesn’t the sun feel nice again? The world suffered for want of all your witty and erudite postings about the “suks” and who has “class”.
Bang your arrogant drums – we missed you. You remind us that there’s something worse than death and taxes. Yankees fans.

  13. Eat a Peach - Dec 21, 2009 at 4:12 PM

The word “loser” appears nowhere in my post. The word “idiot” however, does appear, and also applies to you. Ditch the ALL CAPS and crawl back under your rock.
You kindly asked me to drop dead even before you assailed me for using unkind words. Is that how your New York Idiot Parents raised YOU DOOOOOOOOD?
