Why all the PB hating? Terrible year last year but the year before he hit .250/.367/.507. He has as good or better of a chance to have have a decent DH year than a 41 year old Sheffield (.276/.372/.451 in 312 PA’s last year but only .225/.326/.400 in 482 PA’s the year before). He probably won’t put up another 900 OPS season but it’s not like he’s worthless. Even if Burrell only ‘bounces back’ like Sheffield did last year he could hit something like .250/.360/.420–and he could easily top this– and is probably a better bet to do so than Sheffield is to repeat last year’s performance over 500 PA’s as a 41 year old.

It would be even truer if his words had forked no lightning, but of course Mr. Cranky has never shied away from bellyaching about any damned thing. And playing in the Tropicana Tumulus is definitely not going to let the sunshine in, both literally and figuratively. After a couple of months of calling that concrete crypt home, he’s going to be so miserable that he will probably go home every night and kick his dog. And if his dog isn’t around, he’ll kick cousin Dwight instead.

How tiresome is Gary Sheffield? Ever since he was 30, he’s been threatening retirement, presumably in reaction to the harsh treatment inflicted upon him by a cruel and uncaring world. Now that people no longer care, he refuses to go gently into that good night.
Poor, misunderstood guy.
