Billy Bean is without a doubt the most over rated GM in baseball. He took a team that was just a player or two away from being a playoff team and gutted it…. And for what? Two years of AAA level performance….. The guy is clueless!

This move has all of us out here in the Bay Area scratching our heads.
First of all, it’s a lot of money that would seem to be used to block newly acquired Taylor from an outfield slot. And what does it say about Scott Hairston, or Travis Buck?
I think, though, that Beane feels like NONE of his current outfield options are long term locks in Oakland.
- Taylor is unproven at the MLB level
- Davis hasn’t shown he can hit for a full year
- Sweeney had bad knees and very little power last year
- Buck has seriously regressed
- Hairston played hurt, but showed no offense in Oakland
- Crisp will likely play good defense, but may not reach .700 OPS in Oakland’s pitchers paradise
So really, what’s to lose?
Oakland will go to Spring training and see who sticks. Some guys will go to Sacramento (AAA) and maybe 1 will get traded by mid-year. In Beane’s world, a trade of Hairston or Crisp will leverage a prospect or two that may have much greater upside directly or in a second trade.
We hope.

And that’s way too much money for Crisp after his injuries last year. Not a very Billy Beane-like move.

So is this Moneyball v2 for Billy? Instead of trying to find a diamonds in the rough, he goes and gets a decent name in the winter and then sells them off for prospects at the ASB?
