"The stat people are taking over"

Dec 23, 2009, 8:55 AM EDT

SI’s Jon Heyman on Twitter: “not that theres anything wrong with it, but the stat people are taking over [the Yankees]: johnson .426 OBP, vazquez 1.02 WHIP.”

Call me crazy, but if recognizing on-base percentage and WHIP is the harbinger of the “stat people” taking over, the stat people took over twenty years ago. Maybe longer.

Mark Twain must be spinning in his grave. How many kilowatts do you think he could generate?

OBP? WHIP? What’s next, men getting their ears pierced and growing their hair long? Get off my lawn, hippies!!

At least he didn’t mention the # of games that Johnson has missed the last five years… who needs cherrypicking of stats anyways?

    You gotta be kidding me…
He should go grab a beer with Frenchy.

Wow. Stats in baseball. Whodathunkit? I half expect that if one asked Heyman how he measure’s one player against another he’d say by height.

    Boras made him say this.

That’s what I thought as well. So you can spin this two ways:that he’s happy the Yankees are because Johnny Damon’s counting stats don’t jump out at you, or that he’s being sarcastic because Matt Holliday has over 100 RBI three of the last four seasons.
