You could hardly say McReynolds "dragged the Mets down" in 87. He hit something like 27 homers and drove in 95 or so runs that year. The Mutts shot themselves in the foot when they nickle-and-dimed Ray Knight out of town (although to be fair, Knight tried a little too hard to cash in his '86 chips and made some really stiff demands during the offseason that made Frank Cashen's bowtie whizz like a beanie propeller). McReynolds was a lover, not a fighter, and whereas in onfield production he more than made up for what Knight took with him, his quiet presence in the clubhouse made up for nothing of Knight's gedoffayouess pyrotechnics. I went to maybe 50 games that Summer of '87 and McReynolds did his job but a lot of other guys played like they had a load in their pants.

The Mets won the series in 86, but they were terrible in 2009. Wouldn't that make Bay the anti-McReynolds? I mean McReynolds dragged down the 87 Mets, is there even any room to get worse now that they have Bay in the fold?
