If defensive ability was more important than hitting the players would be paid that way. The hitters are the ones that get the big contracts and are the ones that are remembered.

Obviously in many cases offensive run production outweighs defensive liablitys. If that wasn’t true then those ballplayers that have been ragged on about being poor defensively wouldn’t be receiving such huge contracts. Catch up.

Yes, of course defense matters, but somehow some of you don’t get it. There are very few outfielders that can combine good defense with good offensive production. I am not sure why I have to say this again but leftfield isn’t a position where defense matters all that much. Anyone that can hit will play. Usually this means they will be put in leftfield because it is a position that a ballplayer can cover with below average ability’s without being a liablity to the team. Any shortcomings they have defensively at this position are more than made up with their bat. And it’s great to allow less runs, but if you don’t score any what does it matter. Carl Crawford, never heard of him. By the time Carl turns 31 his legs will be gone and he will be stuck in leftfield. Only difference is Carl doesn’t have the same pop in his bat. Then what will they say about him.

You really don’t think there’s a difference between Carl Crawford and Jason Bay in left field? Or Joe Mauer behind the plate? Or Pujols at first? Maybe you’re a Royals fan or something, and you’re unfamiliar with defensive aptitude, but guess what? It matters. Teams that field the ball allow less runs from scoring, in turn giving them a better chance of winning ballgames. I would think would understand how the game of baseball works by now. Unless you’re the Yankees and all nine in your starting lineup are capable of 20+ home runs, you’re probably going to need some decent run prevention to win.

How many Gold Glove left fielders are there, none. How many good fielding centerfielders can hit, very few. How many really good fielding outfielders are voted on the allstar team. If Jason Bay was judged against only other leftfielders he would be average. Leftfield is the one place you can play without being a liability. Everyone wants to judge Bay on his fielding, why not take a look at your leftfielder. Or your big fat firstbaseman. How about that catcher that can’t throw any runners out. Most ballplayers have defensive liabilitys. But can they hit.

Bay dose feild all balls he can get to. He is just slow. He throws slow. He run hard and wil steal. If he was pushed he could steal up to around 30 a year with 30 homers. Not a bad bat. How many 30-30 guys are there.
IN Boston we wanted/needed a better cover player. Not a bang bang, oh I have to think about MY contrat Bay. It is setteled and over, I do hope he fully thinks about playing and becomes whohe can be!!

Wow, there sure are a lot of sports writers overly critical of Jason Bay’s fielding ability. Wake up. There are players all over MLB that are not adept at fielding their positions. Whether in the infield or at catcher or the outfield many are out of position. What’s next, are you going to take points off of pitchers that don’t have a good glove. I can see it now,” Yea, he won twenty games but can’t field worth a darn.”
