The five worst deals so far

Dec 31, 2009, 10:00 AM EDT

I’ll be honest: I miss those halcyon days of the late 90s when guys like Pat Meares would get $15 million deals. Sure, we still see stinkers, but not in the sheer volume we used to. Now we’re left with only one or two total head scratchers every winter.

There’s still plenty of time for teams to make bad deals this winter —
after all, the Mets haven’t given Bengie Molina the three years he
wants yet — but the last day of 2009 isn’t a bad place to stop and
take stock of the awfulness that has so far transpired.  FOX’s Dayn Perry does the honors today, looking at the five worst transactions so far. Click through for his rationale, but the five he picks are (1) the Brandon Lyon deal; (2) The Diamondbacks’ part of the Granderson deal; (3) The Cubs part of the Milton Bradley deal; (4) Fernando Rodney to the Angels; and (5) the White Sox taking on Juan Pierre.

I’d like to thank Dayn for not including any of the brilliant moves I made as I freight-trained towards last place in the DiamondMind league he runs and in which I participate.  Just know that my team — the Matewan Massacre — would sign Pat Mears in a heartbeat. He’s a gamer, you know, and you can’t get enough gamers in fantasy baseball.

Why when I google him it is Pat Meares? Or is there another?

Reminds of when the Pirates stupidly signed Kevin Yung too.

I know it’s a good time to take stock, but it seems unfair to put together any “worst deals” list without allowing Omar Minaya to have the last word.

I wonder what the 5 worst list will look like after the Molina and Holliday deals are signed.

    John Sayles? Me likey.

Considering the Massacre’s wealth of young pitching, I’d say better days are ahead.

Juan Pierre will become the second best trade the White Sox have ever made with the Dodgers . Paul Konerko , according to Tommy LaSorda , was the best prospect since the Yankees took Mickey Mantle out of Oklahoma by offering him a new Chevrolet and $ 100.00 spending money .
Well , Tommy was right , Konerko has delivered and the Dodgers screwed up by trading him . Pierre , had a better season than Manny Ramirez last year and again the Dodgers are screwing up . Yes, I know that Pierre doesn’t hit home runs , but he’s lightening fast , steals bases and has an excellent on base percentage . The Chicago White Sox has bought themselves a very good player.
Worst five deals of the year ? What does this tell you about Dayn Perry and his baseball saavy ? Not much !

Konerko was traded to the Reds, who then also gave up on him and traded him to Chicago. Have fun with Pierre.

Geez! How about waiting a couple of months? Some of these deals involve prospect, and we will not be able to judge for years in certain cases.

Dealing Lee for Halladay. Halladay wont make it through April.Phillies GM should get the boot for this.

That’s OK. In the eyes of sportswriters every trade is a bad trade. First they will criticize a player for having all bat and no D then turn around and do the same to a fast outfielder that doesn’t hit home runs. And just so that no one is left out, they will find something to object about that player that plays defense and can hit. It’s equal opportunity criticism of everyone in the business sooner or later, unless you are another sportswriter.

All of the sports writers are ragging on Holliday and Bay for being weak defensively, yet they get contracts in excess of 15 million dollars a year. Juan Pierre is so much better in the field, yet the White Sox are only out 4 million a year for him. Some writer should make up his mind about what is important and what is not. And maybe take his head out of his….For 4 million a year Pierre would be a steal for any team.

all those deals are bad, but the worst deal was made yesterday by the Cubs and wouldnt be awful for Cub fans if I am right.
