Beltre is falling into the void created by the Yankees. He is a prime example of the dynamic that is being formed in MLB by the overpaying of athletes by New York. The Yanks don't need a third baseman, so Beltre is going to get 15 to 20% less that what he wants for that reason alone. Whether he is worth it, or not, is another question.
He should be busting his hump to get into Boston. He would probably raise his homer total significantly there.

I'm not at all surprised that Boston passed on Beltre. His OBP over the last 5 years is .317. Gag.
The A's, me thinks, would be better off spending the money elsewhere. His defense is nice and he can slug a little. But a .317 OBP? I can't throw much more than 2/20 or 3/25 at a guy like that.

If the east coast team isn't Boston, it could be the Orioles.
I doubt it though, unless Beltre's asking price dropped to something like 2 years and $16-18M.

I think Billy Beane would be lynched if he paid $ 10M per on a multi-year deal for Beltre.
Beltre was a .683 OPS and .304 OBP last year in Seattle, a ballpark similar to Oakland as far as park effects.
Beane has not been above serious mistakes as a GM: Terrence Long 4 years/$18M; Esteban Loiaza 3/$ 27M; Eric Chavez 6/$66M, and he's recently fallen in love with signing veterans and then trading them mid-year for the draft picks.
But Beltre's defense was available much more cheaply. The A's had Jack Hanahan whose ZR of 8.4 in 2009 nearly matches Beltre's 8.8, and whose OBP in Seattle of .311 is similar as well. What's different is salary: Hanahan made $ 410k to Beltre's $ 13.4M.

According to Atkins, AM signed him to play 1st base. If that is the case the other team *could* be the O's. The problem with it being the O's is I don't see AM offering more then a two year deal with Bell at AA.

Well, the Jays need one. They have EE but depending on how bad the burns are, he might be out for a while. Or they could be looking at moving him. Either way he is a FA after the season and they have no one in the system. Nevertheless, it's a stretch unless the price fell a lot.
