Mariners to acquire Casey Kotchman from the Sox

Jan 5, 2010, 4:35 PM EDT

With a Youkilis and a Beltre in the fold, Casey Kotchman didn’t have a home in Boston. Now, according to Buster Olney, it looks like he’ll be shipped off to Seattle.  The deal — which is being reported as “close” but not final, is for a minor leaguer. Kotchman would likely start in Seattle.

Kotchman used to look like an excellent all-around first baseman. He hit .296/.372/.467 in 137
games in 2007 with strong D.  Since then he’s hit just .270/.333/.398 in 269 games, which is borderline for a starter.  Maybe a trip back to the AL West will turn his fortunes around.

Is this what Twitter hath wrought? Are comments over 140 characters now too long?

Remember those Cardinals teams from the 80s, with all the speedsters and then one lumbering outfielder who hit cleanup? Why did it take so long to replicate that formula? Oh yeah, steroids.

I like this for Jack Z. As a RS fan, I wouldn’t have minded starting Kotchman at 1st, though Lowell works just as well. Kotch fits in well with what the Mariners are trying to do. Maybe pair him up with a RH 1B for tough lefties, otherwise he should give you a positive return. The latest report someone off the MLB roster and a minor leaguer.
Hopefully it’s a LH reliever or a utility IF. Anyone familiar enough with the Mariners to know what they might have available?

The Mariners are having a great offseason. They look like a great contender for 2010. Im surprised they picked up a 1B when they have so much potential out of Russel Branyan. He hit 31 HRS in 120 games I think, but they are concerned with his back problems.

I understand the M’s will send Bill Hall and a minor and cash to Boston.
