The good timing of McGwire's statement

Jan 13, 2010, 9:32 AM EDT

This is pretty minor in the grand scheme of things, but I’ve been thinking a bit about the timing of Mark McGwire’s little coming out party. Obviously his hiring meant that he had to talk about all of this, but when was the best time?

He was hired in October.  Major League Baseball probably would have got mad if he brought this circus down during the playoffs and World Series, so that’s out.  It was reported in yesterday’s New York Times that he didn’t want to do it before last week’s Hall of Fame announcement, because “because he did not want to appear as if he were trying to affect his chances of getting into the Hall of Fame.”  That makes sense too, so cross off the rest of November and December.  If he had gone too long beyond now it would have been getting pretty close to spring training, and people would have increasingly wondered when he was going to talk.

I guess, then, that Monday was as good a time as any.  Which is kind of a bummer for me, because I was thinking of starting a rumor that Bill DeWitt demanded that he talk now in order to draw attention away from the fact that he got schooled by Boras in the Matt Holliday negotiations.  Oh well.

Craig, great take on the Holliday contract! Seriously, why do people continue to beat up the Yankees for their payroll, while teams that sign ridiculous contracts like this one consistently get a pass?

Pretty obviously, yes, known and unknown steroid users will be in the Hall long before Pete Rose, seeing as Rose has been banned for life for betting on baseball.
Some (like Goose Gossage) have suggested banning those caught with steroids as well. I disagree with him. One, as the Olympics have clearly shown, people keep right on trying to find new ways to cheat regardless of the consequences. More important is that we have hoards of amphetamine abusers throughout at least the last 50 years of MLB, including prominent Hall members (names like Mays and Mantle). Their use of “greenies” was just as illegal as steroids and were/are also used as PEDs. How does one justifiably state one PED is worth a player getting the Rose/Shoeless Joe treatment and the other skates?

His timing is great in that there is a full slate of football playoffs coming, and the conversation will shift away from McGwire and to football by tomorrow. It won’t be forgotten, but it will fade as Favre and Romo and Peyton take over for the next month.
And certainly I am glad that I won’t have to hear about it for a while. Though I am not sure that hearing about Brett Favre is an improvement.

His timing is great, with the Olympics coming up and the NFL playoffs already in gear and the craziness of College Football coaching there is a minimum amount of time to tear his story and apology down. It will be forgotten very soon and he will be at spring training coaching the young guys telling them that his steroid use had nothing to do with the homeruns he hit. (yea, right!)

Poor Peter…. In all fairness, what he did was less like cheating. What he did wouldn’t help get him HOF numbers either… It hardly seems fair to me….

It’s nice to see your caps lock isn’t on the fritz anymore. And that was a funny email too. Yay Tigers LadyBoy

Simple, their team sucks( Prates,Royals,Nationals etc.) and
it is better to hate the Yankees while your owner stuffs Yankee
money in his pocket rather than his payroll.

Personally,I believe his lawyers told him this would be a GREAT time to admit he didn’t really need the Steroids because the Lawyers figured there would be hell to pay at NBC for asking Conan to move his show to 12:05 am to accomodate Leno moving back to the 11:30 time slot and this entire situation was really
” misremembering ” of why he didn’t need the Steroids.
