Brad Lidge has surgery

Jan 14, 2010, 6:00 PM EDT

Phillies closer Brad Lidge had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Wednesday.  Something to do with “loose bodies and meniscal debridement.” I hate it when that happens.

He’ll start throwing again in ten days or so.  It’s unclear if he’ll be ready to go by Opening Day.  If he can’t go, the Phillies will have to find someone else to blow saves for them until he’s back to 100%.

Most patients can start jogging by 4 weeks after this surgery, so I’d be a bit surprised if he wasn’t ready by opening day.

Why do surgeries like this one and Beltran’s not take place right after the season is done? How is it that a condition not worthy of surgery in November is suddenly worthy of in January?

A lot of conditions, like meniscal tears, hurt but they don’t generally handicap an athlete too much in the short run. However, post-operative recovery requires rest and then rehab–in other words, the player finishing out the season in a lot of cases doesn’t really injure him too much more, but surgery would mandate time on DL. The timing is also usually so that (if feasible) the athlete can be ready to participate at the start of the next season.

Brad Lidge, I am very very very disappointed in you, young man. We had no idea you were even hurt.

I bet you Brad was sure to get permission before he went in. He didn’t want the team grievance hitting the fan like Beltran’s surgery almost did.
But fear not, Feelies fans. Kevin Gregg ought to be available for the right price (passed under the table to the Cubs) and if not, Mitch Williams will come out of retirement just for you, because you loved him and he luh-huvs you, sweet people that you are.

Man CC, the tags were fantastic today, if I must say.

The Phills would have clinched in July if Lidge could have pulled it together. I think it was his lack of pitches that did him in more than “injuries”, we will soon find out won’t we??? YA GOTTA HAVE MORE THAN 2 PITCHES IN THE BIG LEAGUES!!!! Fastball slider, slider fastball isn’t too hard to figure out is it??? Duhh, lay off the slider, it’ll be a ball, then proceed to tear the cover off the fastball. Simple remedy to Lidge.
