Why weren't the Mets in on LaRoche?

Jan 14, 2010, 2:50 PM EDT

Deep Thought: For what the Mets are going to likely pay Bengie Molina, they could have signed Adam LaRoche and any of the multiple $3 million-and-cheaper catchers who have signed this winter and who aren’t appreciably worse than Molina, including but not limited to Gregg Zaun, Miguel Olivo, John Buck, and Ivan Rodriguez.

And even if you think Molina is the best of the bunch, isn’t Molina + Daniel Murphy at first base < any of these guys + Adam LaRoche at first base?

I don’t know… I’m no statamatician, but I’d guess the difference would be worth around half a win, tops. Every player listed above kinda sucks.

    Two words: Omar Minaya

Craig, you throw those logic symbols around like you had a Jesuit education. If you did, don’t worry. That from which you probably still need to recover is as yet no worse than that from which us secularly educated types need to recover, just of a different order, so to speak.

Most times I agree with you Craig, but I’m surprised on this one. Adam LaRoche is a notoriously slow starter and would not be treated well in NY with a subpar performance in April and May.
His stats were better than Murphys last year, but not by much. I’m not a huge fan of Murphy, but giving a homegrown player another chance seems to make more sense than paying LaRoche. Especially with the kid Ike Davis waiting in the minors.

Murphy was worse that Laroche on his worst day and had hands of stone at first. Laroche signed a 1 year deal and so he would not have blocked Ike Davis. Molina barely finds first base and is an occupational hazard with the piano he carries on his back. Just another Omar failure in a long line of failures. The free-ride from the Santana steal is over – Omar has done nothing to inspire confidence in this season and the last 3 years of failure should have ended his tenure.

  6. Benny Blanco - Jan 14, 2010 at 4:38 PM

I agree that Minayas tenure should be over, but not signing Adam LaRoche is not a Minaya failure. Far from it. Defensively he may be better than Murphy, but thats not saying much.
As for offense, check the stats. He hit more HR’s but besides that, differences are minor. Higher AVG by 10 points, higher OBP by 40. Was it a better year? Yes. Is it 5 Million better? Hardly.
Like I said, not a huge fan of Murphy, but giving him one more year is not gonna break a team with bigger issues. LaRoche is far from the answer. You have to agree Murphy may have some untapped potential, no?

La-DoUche HAS PROBLEMS WITH LOS METS FROM HIS DAYS IN PITTSBURG, I BELIEVE BELTRAN COMMENTED THAT LOS METS SHOULD NOT HAVE LOST 4 OF 6 GAMES TO THEM DURING THE COURSE OF A FEW DAYS LAST YEAR. I WISH YOU GUYS WOULD STOP WORRYING ABOUT ALL THE STATS THEY INVENTED OVER THE YEARS AND ACTUALLY WATCH SOME GAMES, AT THE VERY LEAST YOU HAVE SOME CREDENTIALS.ALSO, DO LOS METS REALLY NEED ANOTHER LATIN PLAYER.

LaRoche can’t speak Spanish, hence Omar will not sign him.
    Case closed.

In a previous post, you ask, Mets and Russell Branyan. Craig, do you sometimes forget how stupid the Mets are? :)
