The Mets talk to Jerry Hairston

Jan 15, 2010, 8:57 AM EDT

Now that Carlos Beltran is going to be missing some time the Mets need some help, and according to Ken Rosenthal they’ve made contact with free agent utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr.

Hairston hit .251/.315/.394 with 10 home runs and 39 RBI in 383 at-bats between the Reds and Yankees last season. Over that time he played every position except first base and catcher, so if the Mets do sign him they’ll have a lot of options as to how to use him.

Hairston was also one of the players named in the Mitchell Report, but we only care about that kind of thing if you’re a big superstar so no one ever mentions it.

It pains me to say this — as a Mets fan, that is — but it’s really funny that the Mets need a C, 1B, and SP, so of course their new interest is in a slightly above replacement-level player who played everything but C, 1B, and P last year.

Don’t despair, Dan. I’m sure that Minaya has Barrajas and Torrealba tucked away at a local Motel 6 if the interminable negotiations with Molina fall through. And I’m sure he’s got offers coming to the withered corpses of Mark Pryor and Mark Mulder. So it’s all good. Your 77 wins are in the bag.

This fits in perfectly with the Mets’ M.O. and actually makes some sense. They identify the problems they had in the previous season and attempt to fix the problem.
After 2008, Minaya et al. decided that the bullpen was their biggest problem. They signed Francisco Rodriguez, traded for J.J. Putz, and picked Rocky Cherry and Darren O’Day in the Rule 5 draft.
After 2009, they decided that the bench was their biggest problem. They have signed a plethora of backup catchers (Coste, Blanco, Montz), Alex Cora (1+1v/$2M+$2M? Really?), and now they are considering at Jerry Hairston.
They may not be correctly identifying their greatest needs or choosing the best solutions, but they do try to fix what they perceive to be their biggest problem.

I absolutely forgot that Jerry Hairston, Jr. was in the Mitchell Report, for the exact reason stated. Hate it when that happens.

If Hairston is in ADDITION to the pitcher and catcher they need, great. If in place of, we have a problem. The Beltran issue is what is it in terms of having to use Angel Pagan in center for a month. The controversy, though, with a star player is really a case of shooting oneself in the foot.

The more Latinos you have the better, if Mark Sanchez (he is also Latino)learns to slide we can slip him in the bull pen as a secret weapon, like Mike Vick, you never know………
