Umpire dive? Are you out of your mind? The umpire fell backwards, which has nothing to do with that FREAK of a man. He should still be in jail for being stupid, not for trying to punch an umpire… Lets see if someone trys punching you tomorrow at work (if you work) what your reaction is… I think Rayburn deserves a lot for being the only real man of the two, and not sending him to jail.

Two things here…. first, it sure looked like the ump was being confrontational in his own right and getting up into Jose’s face; and 2nd, I sure didn’t see any contact. This whole deal sure isn’t what the media has portrayed.

Come on! Look at the posts accusing the Ump of flopping and phantom punch.
As a Manager or coach, you have a right to call time out and question the application of a rule, and to a lesser extent question judgment, if the ump did not see the play, and urge him to ask for help. A rule application is clear, to ask for help in judgment is the option of the ump that makes the call, generally.
At some point, usually within a minute, as a coach you know if you are going to get the call. Since there was no discussion or umpire conference, you have to know Offerman was questioning judgment. He pushed it too far and argued too long, drawing a umpire to intervene. That is when, as a coach, you should know you went too far, and it is time to get a last word in as you retreat to the dugout. Not to continue chasing the ump drawing contact and then throw a punch.
I don’t know why he is still in organized baseball at any level since he pulled out the Juan Marichal assault with a deadly weapon, bat attack. But there he is coaching, Marichal never faced criminal charges and was throwing first pitches as late as 2007, and even is in the Hall of Fame. Roseboro was never the same after the horrific attack. If Offerman continues, it is likely to result in someone else getting seriously injured or killed.

From the looks of the video his fist never made contact with the ump. The umps head doesn’t move in the direction of the alleged punch as you would expect it to had Offerman actually made contact.
