Carlos Delgado is limping in winter ball

Jan 24, 2010, 12:49 PM EDT

Those still hanging on to the notion that Carlos Delgado will sign a contract with the Mets should take note of the following from Jayson Stark of ESPN.com:

“He’s got no range at first — none,” said one scout. “He actually
limps out there. He can’t play first on a day-to-day basis. I think he
can still DH, because he’s still got power. But to play first for a
team like the Mets? Can’t see it.”

Reports about his offense have been pretty positive, and he even legged out a triple on Friday, but he has shown little ability to move laterally just nine months removed from hip surgery. If National League teams aren’t willing to take a chance on the 37-year-old slugger, he’ll have a tough time finding anything beyond a minor league contract with Fernando Tatis, Xavier Nady, Gary Sheffield, Jim Thome, Melvin Mora, Ryan Garko, Hank Blalock, Mike Jacobs, Jermaine Dye and Russell Branyan also out there looking for work.
