The way my dad told it (he played in the game) was that the Yankee scouts called NY with the news that DiMaggio was able to get a foul ball off Paige and it was their perspective that DiMaggio would make a great player… Dad said that you couldn’t see Paige’s fastball – you just felt it go by… Paige likely was the best pitcher in the history of baseball…

DISAGREE…SATCH WOULD BE MY CHOICE,LIKELY A “TOP 5″ ALLTIME PITCHER (NOT 10), A 100% CLASS ACT THAT COULD GO PITCH 9-15 INNINGS GAMES N WIN W/HIS PRESENCE IF NOT HIS ARM N BAT N N NOT HAVE SUCH A “JOLTIN JOE BIG HEAD/EGO” A NICE GUY W/A TEMPER 2WHEN HE RETIRED IE. WHEN HE WAS A GUEST @ SPORTS VENUES, HE ALWAYS WANTED/DEMANDED IN HIS APPEARANCE CONTRACTS 2 B INTRODUCED AS “JOE DI THE “GREATEST” BALL PLAYER IN THE GAME (I ASSUMED HE MEANT THEN N NOW ERA’S)ASIDE FROM TAKING A DOZEN ROSES EVERY YEAR TO HIS X-WIFE’S MARILYN MOMROE’S GRAVESIDE!

THE NUMBERS/TIDE IS TURNING AGAIN (IN REVERSE) AS THE #/% OF MLB BLACK PLAYERS IS @ ONE OF THE “LOWEST-POINTS” IN THE MODERN ERA GAME @ ONLY 12-15% OF TOTAL ETHNIC BREAKDOWN, WHY IS THIS..MAYB BLAME THE OWNERS N BUD “IDIOT” SELIG/COMMISIONERS, PLAYERS/UNION, SCOUTS, MGRS, AGENTS, WRITERS N/OR FATE!?! WHY IS WHITE PLAYERS LIKE “BIG/LIER MAC” LET BACK/WELCOMED BACK MLB (BY BUD “IDIOT” SELIG”, OWNERS, FANS) BUT BLACK PLAYER BARRY BONDS ISN’T N CONTINUES 2B CHASTISED N SCRUTINIZED FOR THE SAME STERIOD USE/OFFENSE? while there are reasons to take each on both sides, I'd take the Yankee Clipper just because Joe is a fielder, hits with authority to any field, can run, hits the long ball and lastly, His Presence on the field could even make the legendary Satchel Paige, probably one of the 10 best pitchers ever to walk onto a MLB pitchers mound, sorry he showed up to play against him. And, this is evident, with Joe D's 56 game hitting streak (without Steroids). Great story, no doubt. Runs like some kind of scene from The Natural…old legend meets new legend on the playground. Too bad about all the racist baseball owners.
