Gammons: 'Mets were only team in on Jason Bay' and Red Sox 'were scared to death of his knees'

Jan 28, 2010, 2:45 PM EDT

Last week Peter Gammons reported that Boston and Jason Bay “had agreed on the framework” of a four-year, $60 million contract in July, but the Red Sox pulled the offer when an MRI exam raised red flags about the health of his knees.
While appearing on WEEI radio today Gammons revealed a few more details:

They wanted him, but they were scared to death of his knees. I never got the impression from either side, from his agents or his club, that the shoulder was that big of a deal. But they were really afraid of both knees and that’s why they dropped the offer from four years to two years.

Somebody said to me, “Gee, there was only one team that went after him, the Mets.” I said, “Yeah, you don’t think that the Angels have requested MRIs? You don’t think the Mariners have requested? They weren’t in on him either.” The Mets were the only team in on Jason.

Bay did struggle with a knee injury in 2007, but for the most part he’s been among baseball’s most durable players, appearing in 892 of a possible 946 games since early 2004, including at least 145 games in each of the past five seasons. Certainly at 31 years old not missing much time in the past doesn’t preclude the Red Sox’s concerns about the future of Bay’s knees from being legitimate, but presumably even the Mets have a doctor on staff who can competently read an MRI. Right? Right?!

This is typical Red Sox Larry Lucchino-Theo Epstein-John Henry spin. Under their regime any player the Red Sox let go or trade has to be demonized for whatever reason. Johnny Damon. Pedro Martinez. Manny Ramirez. Nomar Garciaparra. And now Jason Bay. They weren’t going to bring back Bay because of his knees, huh? So I guess that it didn’t matter when Lackey has had arm troubles the past two seasons. And John Smoltz was coming off of arm surgery. And how about Tim Wakefield’s back? And what about Big Papi’s knee? And J.D. Drew’s back? How about Andria Betre’s shoulder’s? He couldn’t even left one of his hands over his shoulder’s last year, but they signed him. Those guys are all A-Okay, but the big stars who leave the Sox just suck and were traitors, hurt, and/or not worth the money. How come when a player leaves the Yankees, Dodgers, Rangers, Twins or some other team they aren’t demonized? If the Red Sox didn’t want to resign Jason Bay then don’t resign him and shutup. This is all spin, because they know Mike Cameron’s 20 HR, 70 RBI’s and .250 batting average is going to look ugly compared to Bay’s 36, 119, .276. So you make this spin up to cover your ass. I’ve never witnessed such a successful organization lie as much as the Red Sox do. Simply put almost everything out of their camp is propoganda. Wait until they don’t resign Josh Beckett next year. All you will hear about is his shoulder problems. Remember this when you hear that Beckett has turned down Boston’s under-the-market offer to him. This is obviously their plan. They’ve kind of become the Scott Boras of baseball teams. They make the Yankees look good!

YOU KNOW PETER GAMMONS SOUNDS LIKE A MAN WHO HAS A VINDETTA AGAINST THE METS IF HE TOOK THE TIME AS HE DOES WITH THE METS BASHING EVERYTHING THEY DO MAYBE NO ONE WOULD WANT TO GO SEE OR WATCH A BALL GAME THE LAST TIME I KNEW HE WASNT A DOCTOR OR A BASEBALL PLAYER OR AN OWNER OF A TEAM BUT HE SURE THINKS HE KNOWS IT ALL
